In 1847, the first shot was fired in what is now Brunswick, Ohio when a team of men from Columbus set off a cannonball with their rifles. He erected a cabin on the east side of the Scioto River in 1796 and named it Brunswick after Prince George's County, Maryland. In 1800 Samuel Shaw purchased land from Caireson and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He also named his cabin Brunswick because he had heard about Prince George's County from his father-in-law John Nicholson who lived there for some time. In 1802 Captain Ebenezer Smith arrived with his family from Rhode Island and set up a homestead on the west side of the Scioto River near present day Water Street and Third Avenue. This location became known as Captain Smiths Landing because of its similarity to HMS "Hudson" which sailed upriver to load goods for England during the American Revolutionary War at that spot. In 1815 Captain Ebenezer Smith's son James acquired additional land along Sixth Avenue north of First Lake including originalCaptain Smiths Landing site now known as Old Bridge Road (now US 12). From this initial location James developedubstantial trade connections with both Cleveland and Cincinnati through purchase of goods transported overland by horse or wagon teams across six miles of open country between First Lake and Fifth Creek junction then south down Fifth Creek to Cincinnati via Bethel Road (now US 422). After much discussion among members meeting February 25 1865 Jno Ladd decided not build wharf for steamboat service which would have interfered with trade with Ky., Pa., Eriecounty etc... It should be noted that none other than General Tom Thumb served as mayor during these years.... federal government funds were used instead resulting in extensive renovations which are still visible today including brick vaults beneath Market Square
Brunswick was founded in 1788 by Captain James Cook and the colonists of Georgia. The area that is now Brunswick was first settled by the Shawnee Indians, who were able to take advantage of the fertile soil and good water supply. After a series of fights with the British, the settlers were able to gain control over the area in 1792. In 1801, Ohio became part of the United States after it was won from France in the Napoleonic Wars. The town began to grow as a result of its location on Ohio's trade routes and its access to natural resources such as coal and timber. By 1830, Brunswick had reached a population of around 3000 people. In 1838, Governor John Fenton ordered all Indian villages east of Akron removed because they were proving an obstacle to white settlement. This led to another wave of immigration and development in Brunswick. By 1850, Brunswick had become an important center for industry and commerce. It also saw an increase in white population growth as well, increasing from 6000 people in 1820 to over 10000 by 1830.
