Brook Park became a town in 1836, and it has remained that way ever since. In 1912, the towns of Mentor and Lisle merged into Brook Park, becoming one municipality. In 1955, the village of Brook Park incorporated as a town. Today, Brook Park is a small community located about 25 miles north-east of Cleveland on I-71. Brook Park is named after two villages in central Ohio: Brookville and Brockton. The name “Brook” comes from the Bostonian word for “stone creek” or “brooklet” (both meaning small stream). The name “Park” was chosen because there were several local quarries near by which to quarry stone for buildings and other structures. It also reflected the fact that many of the early settlers in this area had come from Rhode Island or New England –Parkside refers to an area just east of downtown where blocks of granite are still found today. The first settler in what is now Brooke Park was Nicholas Brooks who arrived with his family in 1824 from Ireland via Portsmouth, England. He began farming land around what is now Mentor but soon realized that he needed more space so he moved westward to take up residence at what is now Brooke Park Township (now part of Lisle Township). The Brooks family left behind a lasting legacy when they donated land to create what is now the parklands along side their original farmsteads. This gesture helped support continuing agricultural activity withinBrookpark until present day; it also remains an important part of its history as one of North America’s oldest communities established primarily for agriculture. Over time, many other families joinedNicholas and Sarah Brooks in making their home here – among them were John Fenton (1827-1913), German Immigrants Johann Gottlieb Neumann (1829-1912) & Wilhelm Hegeler (c 1798-1886), Nathan Hale (1782-1852), Michael Ostroff (1821-1900), James Worthy Shurtleff(died 1865) & his wife Caroline Dodge Shurtleff(b 1830). In 1836, whenBrook park became a town, various businesses opened up including boatbuilders JF Neumann&Wm Hegelerand cloth merchants M Schleifer&Chas Scudder both from Mentor/Lisle countyOH., grocer P Hirschhorn & druggist Geo Slevin also came to town during this time frame.. through these various businesses growth took place as people started buying homes hereabouts which made streets like 3rd main street & alleyways leading off 3rd main St - turning it into one big Village center.. later on 2nd main St became commercial district with grocery store Denny Bros closed down due to strikes then reopened by new ownership renamed Erie Drug Store next door then closed again 2 years later due to fire
