Brook Park is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located in Lucas County on the eastern edge of the Greater Cleveland area. Brook Park was founded in 1810 by John Brook and his wife Priscilla as a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1827, it became a village after being chosen as one of four townships within Lucas County. It lost its village status in 1905 but regained it in 1955 when it merged with neighboring Arlington to form Arlington Heights. Brook Park has been designated a national historic district since 1966. The community was named for John Brock, an early settler who bought land near what is now Brook Park from Native American leader Delaware Chippewa chief Miami Terracek and began to build homes there in 1814-1815 following his purchase of some 500 acres (2 km²) of forested land east of where present-day Arlington Heights stands today. By 1830, most residents were European Americans, although Indian people continued to live here until around 1840 due to their lack of access to education and other resources common among white settlers at that time. In 1825, John Matson founded Ohiopyle Coal Company on the west bank of the Scioto River north of what is now Arlington Heights, which led to increased coal traffic throughBrook Park and elsewhere along the river corridor and helped spur development along these routes throughout much of central Ohio during this period; such burgeoning commerce also contributed importantly to increasing social mobility for manyethnic groups within Ohio during this era – developments that would eventually leadto significant racial tension over economic opportunities and educational opportunitiesduring subsequent decades throughout much Midwest America (e.g., via various formsof “integrated” public school systems).
