The Village of Broadview Heights was organized in 1875 and named for Isaiah West Broadview, an early settler who had moved from Delaware County to western Ohio in 1824. At first, only men could own land and build homes; however, by 1907 women were allowed to purchase land as well. In 1916, the village became a city after it passed an election law granting voting rights to all citizens over 18 years old regardless of race or sex. In 1921-22, Broadview Heights merged with nearby Euclid Township to form what was then one of Ohio's largest annexed villages - at that time accounting for more than half of all annexation activity in that state during that period. In 1795, a group of settlers known as the Dayton family purchased land in what is now Broadview Heights from the Anishinaabe tribe. The Deshler family also moved to Broadview Heights in 1876.
