The village was founded by Reuben Draper in 1825 as a post office and store on the edge of what is now Broadview Heights Cemetery. In 1828, Draper erected a log cabin on his land which served as the first school in broadview Heights. The first black person to live in broadview Heights was Moses Hill in 1865. In 1902, Jonas Salk founded Salk Laboratories, Inc., in broadview Heights and developed vaccines there for yellow fever and other diseases that would later be used to kill millions of people around the world. In 1925, BroadVIEW HEIGHTS SCHOOLS INC., with an enrollment of over 900 students from grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade became one of only three schools in Cuyahoga County (the others being Euclid High School and Akron School District) which offered instruction exclusively in GED classes for African American students until 1965 when it converted into a four-year high school operated as part of The Boarding Schools System. In 1978, after years of effort by many community members including then Mayor Michael Coleman,broadVIEW HTS COOPERATIVE EDUCATION CORPORATION was formed by combining two existing charter schools - Gradeschool BroadVIEW HEIGHTS (grades PK-12) with Cleveland Christian Academy (a private religious school). Broadview Heights is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 7,998 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Broadview Heights were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1696. The name "Broadview" may derive from a nearby creek, "Hudson". In 1814, Joshua Emmons and Solomon Stowe bought land here for $5 per acre. They set about developing it into a village with a courthouse and schoolhouse. Over time, other settlers arrived: Irish immigrants in 1845; Germans in 1880; Italians in 1906; Poles in 1914; and Vietnamese refugees who settled here after the Vietnam War ended. In 1907, the Broadview Heights School District was formed to serve all of Cleveland's Indian villages within its borders (Kankakee, Grayslake, Mayfield Village). The school district built two additions on North High Street: one for students and their families and another for teachers and staff. A third addition was built later that year for use by businesses that wished to locate on high ground near their employees' homes (the Hillcrest Shopping Center). Today, Broadview Heights remains one of only a few districts nationwide that provides full day kindergarten through 12th grade education to all children living within its boundaries! In 1922, when Cleveland became an independent city limits separate from Akron Municipal Court jurisdiction, BroadVIEW HEIGHTS VILLAGE INCorporated took legal form as the FIRST INDIAN MEMBER OF THE CLEVELAND COUNCIL OF ELECTIONS - becoming an Equal Opportunity Community!
In 1812, the area that is now Broadview Heights was part of the Town of Ligonier. In 1814, the Township of Ligonier was created. The first settler in Broadview Heights was John Dickey and his family in 1817. In 1830, the Township of Ligonier was dissolved and replaced by the Township of Mentor. The town became a village in 1879 and then a city in 1907. The population of Broadview Heights was over 12,000 when it became a city and increased to over 25,000 by 1920. It reached its peak size during World War II with an estimated population of 50,000 people. After the war, the population decreased as many residents moved away or left for other cities due to economic conditions. Today, Broadview Heights has apopulation below 10,000 people and is considered an inner-city neighborhood
