This made Broadview Heights one of the leading firearms manufacturers in Ohio. By 1840, Winchester had also begun producing rifles and handguns. In 1847, he opened a store on Elmira Road that became one of the most popular gun stores in town. The store continued to be run by Winchester until 1861 when he moved to Detroit where he died at age 83 years old.
Broadview Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 38,869 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Ohio and the 11th most populous in Greater Cleveland.[1] It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by Nicholas Broadwalk and others in 1814 as a village on a grant from George Washington[2][3] and grew quickly due to its location near mills and transportation routes. The town's first store opened in 1827 and until 1868, all goods were shipped from Erie through Broadview Heights to be sold there. In 1870, broadview Heights became one of two cities within Cleveland – along with Jenks – that opted out of annexation by the City of Cleveland because they felt their position as an independent municipality would have been undermined if they had become part of the larger metropolitan area. The decision helped keep Broadview Heights largely self-sufficient until 1880 when railroad construction began nearby and led to increased shipments;[4] during this time, many businesses closed or moved away due to competition from new arrivals such as Mansfield and Strongsville. In 1970, following decades of decline in manufacturing jobs throughout Northeast Ohio,[5][6][7] local officials initiated a process known as "The Toledo Strategy" which aimed to revitalize downtown Toledo with investments such as job training programs for young workers,[8] cultural events (such as summertime art festivals),[9][10] and marketing initiatives specific to Toledo's historical reputation for food processing.[11][12] This strategy failed to reverse declines in manufacturing jobs throughout Northeast Ohio during the early 21st century,[13][14][15],[16], leading some observers[17][18] including Mayor Frank Jackson[19], to label BroadVIEW HEIGHTS "the last great American industrial city".[20]), though it has since seen some resurgence thanks to growth in services such as online retailing and professional sports teams. In recent years, however, efforts have focused on restoring historic neighborhoods adjacent to downtown Toledo while also developing new ones around central business district located on Waterfront Drive (formerly Princess Street). These efforts have resulted in continued declines in manufacturing employment throughout Northeast Ohio beginning into 2020 despite strong job growth inside Downtown Toledo itself (due largely to expansions at Lucas Oil Stadium).[21])
