The first settler in what is now Broadview Heights was John Pemberton in 1812. He purchased 1/2 section of what is now Delaware Avenue from Native American Indians for $200 cash. By 1814, other settlers had also arrived in this part of Ohio and by 1830 there were over 50 families living hereabouts including 5 brothers who founded the city of Cleveland which still exists today as a working-class community with strong African American roots
Broadview Heights was founded in 1814 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the broad avenue that ran through it. The first settler in Broadview Heights was Benjamin Franklin, who built his home on what is now the corner of State and Broadview avenues. In 1824, the town voted to incorporate as a village. In 1828, a school was built in what is now Broadview Heights; it served as the only local educational institution until 1925. During World War II, Broadview Heights played an important role in the war effort as its residents supplied goods and services to the war effort.
