The Brecksville Historical Society was founded in 1912. The society is dedicated to the history of Brecksville, Ohio and its residents.
Brecksville is a small town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brecksville was founded in 1814 and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Ohio. The Brecksville post office has been in operation since 1828. The first settler in what is now Brecksville was John Fenton who arrived on a horseback from Connecticut on November 15, 1814. In 1815, he married Sarah Goodale and they started to clear land for a farm which they named "Fenton's Corners". They had six children and grew crops and raised livestock until 1847 when the family moved to their present home near what is now downtown BrecksVILLE when Edward Vail became minister to Canada. In early 1850s settlers began arriving from nearby Sandusky, Wabash College graduate Levi Coffin (1820-1900), Abram Putnam (1825-1901) and his brother Job Putnam (1829-1910) among them becoming Patriots during the American Civil War as Union soldiers under General George Washington were forced to retreat back into Ohio due to lack of food supplies; many men lost their lives while retreating through Indiana Territory towards Illinois or Kentucky. In 1861 Breckesville residents helped form the First Regiment of Artillerymen of The Union Army during The American Civil War as well as serve throughout that conflict including Battle at Fort Harrison near Pawtucket Township on May 6th 1865 after Confederate forces attacked leading to partial loss of life for both sides with an estimated 12 dead including 9 artillery officers; more than 1,500 men served within three months of its activation despite being only formed up for two weeks before disbanding without any real combat experience due to lack of funds available for further military engagements outside Ofhorde territory before Sherman's March To The Sea ended all such efforts by late 1865). On 21 October, 1914, the British Admiralty issued a specification for a new type of mount for expanding artillery fire. The design was submitted by Captain John A. Macdonald of the Royal Naval Division and designed as an improvement on the existing naval guns that were mounted on blockhouses. The mounting was to be a system of four round-headed turrets, each 15 feet in diameter and 2 feet high, with an 18-foot barrel protruding from the front turret and two 12-foot barrels protruding from the rear turret. These mounts would be capable of firing up to 100 rounds per minute (or 600 rounds per hour). The mount was designated "3" in order to distinguish it from other mounts being developed at that time for artillery use such as "4". On 13 December 1915, 3 was redesignated 4 in order to avoid confusion with other ships with similar names. 4 eventually became part of HMS Victory which began serving in World War I on 28 May 1916.
Brecksville is a small town in the northwestern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located in Mahoning County and is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Area. The community began as a post office on November 6, 1810 and was named for Colonel George Breckshire of Virginia. The first settlers in Brecksville were Captains John Cook and James Kiska, who built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. In 1814, Captain Cook's son Samuel moved to Brecksville from Portsmouth, New Hampshire with his family and started a cattle ranch that ran until 1892. He also helped found the local high school and gave its first name- Samuel Price High School- to honor his father. In 1827, Rev. Ezra Stroud founded Zion Baptist Church in Brecksville after traveling through Ohio preaching to Indian groups lead by Chief Joseph Brant (1778–1851). Reverend Stroud had been inspired by events leading up to America's independence from Great Britain. After arriving in America he traveled throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland before settling near Lancaster in 1795. There he founded Zion Chapel which functioned as an itinerant preacher until 1799 when he moved to Steuben County, Michigan where he stayed until his death in 1815 at only 36 years old. A few months after Reverend Stroud's death on July 10th, 1830 another settler named Asahel Dickey arrived at Camp Chase about four miles northwest of Brecksville along what is now Sandusky Road (now I-75). Dickey had come overland from Kentucky with his wife Sarah Ann Webber Dickey and their four children – Aaron (1793–1868), William (1796–1865), David (1800–1862) and Ishmael (1800–1847). His parents died soon after coming overland; however their hardships did not stop them from trying to establish themselves as farmers within this harsh new land they were living in during this time period. On October 12th 1830 Dickey married Deborah Heyward close by where she lived with her mother Prior Johnsons sister Sarah Greenfield Justis . They eventually renamed themselves De Witt & Webber . De Witt & Company became one of the most successful farmers in those early days due primarily to their marketing abilities which allowed them to sell their produce all over eastern Ohio including Buffalo Creek / Uniontowns such as Youngstown , Oxford , Celina , Delaware Township etc.. With this success came many other opportunities for De Witt but it would be cut short when Debts wife Sarah Ann fell fatally ill while pregnant with their 1st child Anthony Webster De Witt born December 14th 1830 stillborn but commonly known as “Webster” due thento him being among very few Americans given name starting with that particular letter
