The village name was derived from an Indian word meaning "place where there are trees." In 1827, two years after their arrival in Ohio, John Ayer and his brother Amos Ayer (brother of Israel) opened a store in what is now North Main Street and West Third Street. That same year saw also the opening of Cincinnati's first brewery—the Columbus Brewery—owned by Andrew Miller and Jeremiah McCormick. Cincinnati's breweries became popular among residents because they produced high-quality beers that were not available elsewhere in the United States until after World War II when Prohibition ended alcohol sales nationwide. Brecksville is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,883 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Lucas County and the fifth most populous city in Ohio. The area that would become Brecksville was part of the Township of Greenfield on the west bank of the Ohio River, east of present-day Youngstown. In 1801, Greenfield was annexed by Wheeling, West Virginia and its boundaries were revised to include all of what would later become Brecksville. The first settler in what would become Brecksville was John Sweeny who arrived in 1788. He built a cabin on a small stream called Pigeon Creek near modern day Northport Road and East 15th Street. Sweeny's cabin served as a home until 1799 when he sold it to Peter Klinkhammer for $200 dollars. Klinkhammer named his farm "Klinkhamer". In 1801, George Washington purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) from Nicholas Biddle for $100 dollars which included much of what is now Brecksville including land between Dearborn Avenue and present day Pigeon Creek Drive. Washington used this land to build Whitehall Academy where he taught school from 1800 to 1802 before moving on to Mount Vernon University in Fairfax County, Virginia where he taught from 1802 until his death in 1835. George Washington also donated some land to form College Park which became known as George Washington University after his death. During President James Kugel's time as President (1988-1994), College Park received funding through legislation known as The Clinton Amendments which provided financial assistance for higher education institutions throughout America during my Administration! In 1830s Abraham Lincoln purchased 780 acres (300 hectares) upstream of modern day Northport Road along with other tracts that would eventually make up what is now downtown Brecksville for $5 per acre ($40 per kilometer). This 1/2 mile wide strip of Illinois farmland formed what is today Market Square—the center spot around which all business activity took place during those days before central transportation became available within a few blocks northward along High Street such as it does today! Emanuel Light Company played an important role in early settlement here too when they constructed the first light house on High Street just south of Market Square—a structure still standing today! On July 4th 1840 Samuel Eliot Morison wrote about “this excellent village” while visiting Steuben County: “It has no equal among our Walnut Hills; there are no groves more beautiful or more plentifully supplied with fruit; no stock more high-class; no public buildings either large or handsome… everything gives evidence that this people have been brought up under severe restraints – I do not remember ever having seen so good an example given by any community living upon natural resources” Notre Dame de la Garde Abbey Monastery operated here also providing religious instruction to local farmers and their families until 1909 when they closed due to lack of enrollment! !!When I moved into my current home over 25 years ago one side had only 5 feet (1 m) clearance on top of my sink because they did not have countertops then!!!!! Today we have granite countertops!!!!!!
