Brecksville began as a small farming community on the edge of what is now central Brecksville and developed into an agricultural center during the early 20th century. The city became a major manufacturing and commercial center after World War II and has since become an important bedroom community for larger cities in eastern Ohio.

Brecksville is a small town in southwestern Ohio, located about 12 miles east of the city of Cleveland on Route 22. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It was once one of the most important iron manufacturing centers in the United States and has been identified as an anchor community for industries such as textiles, automotive parts and steel production. Brecksville also has a significant agricultural industry that produces corn, soybeans and other crops. The town was founded in 1812 by members of the Delaware Tribe of Indians. The first settlers in Brecksville were farmers who migrated from what is now Pennsylvania during the early 1800s. In 1810, they purchased land from the Ashtabula tribe and named their new settlement after General Nicholas Wayne (1763-1847), who had commanded British forces during part of the American Revolution. By 1812, Brecksville had developed into a small village with a population of about 30 people. That year, General James Dearborn (1775-1846) arrived in America with his army and platted what is now Brecksville on March 1, 1811 - becoming its first Mayor. In 1830, Major John Fenton built a mill known as "Fenton's Mill" on current day Elmira Road near where he later built his home still standing today. This mill was used to produce flour for local restaurants and bakery owners across Cleveland while also providing employment for many residents; it continued to operate until 1907 when it became part of the Cleveland Manufacturing Company which then closed down due to World War I economic problems. After World War I ended, many businesses within Brecksville closed including Fenton's Mill as well as several other mills within town limits that produced goods for local consumers like shoeshine shops and laundry services before eventually being shuttered entirely by 1950s standards However some notable buildings that remain from this time include: First Congregational Church (now First Presbyterian Church), Second Congregational Church (now Stonington Lutheran School), Masonic Hall/Masonic Lodge #1 (now used as an office building), United Methodist Episcopal church west side lot which housed various social services through outtown throughout the 50s-60s before finally being sold to developers in 2000; old Post Office Tower which still stands vacant today next to First Presbyterian Church despite having been declared structurally unsound by both sides back in 2009 but subsequently being repaired & reoccupied since then; Old Dairy Barn which served as a grocery store until 1984 when it merged with Kroger supermarkets nearby; Brown Bros./Pete's Pizza restaurant which opened its doors in 1950 adjacent to Pete's Pizza - serving up pizza until 1997 when it merged with Lion’s Den restaurant chain - siting currently outside on Elmira Road across from Shea Stadium ruins
In 1814, a group of Ohio pioneers founded Brecksville. The town was named for James Breckinridge, the first U.S. senator from Kentucky and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Brecksville grew rapidly during its early years, with several stores and a school opening up in what is now downtownBrecksville. In 1828, the town became a county seat under Ohio's new state Constitution, and by 1830 had a population of around 150 people. Breckinridge was an important figure in Ohio politics during his time as governor (1830-38) and as speaker of the House (1834-35). He also served as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1839 to 1840. Breckinridge died in 1846 at the age of 82 years old. His death marked the end of an era in which Ohio governors were highly influential in national politics.
