Brecksville is a small town in Ohio, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is located in Pickering Township and part of the Lima-Muncie, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Brecksville post office opened on December 12, 1871. The village of Brecksville was founded by Fayette County farmers in 1872 as a small community on the east side of the Ottawa River. In 1875, it became an incorporated village with a government that consisted of a board of trustees and four elected officials: three men and one woman. The Village authorities began to issue their own currency in 1886 which helped popularize sound banking practices among villagers. A new dam was built across the river in 1889 to provide irrigation for agriculture and industry; this also led to increased trade between Brecksville and other villages along the Ottawa River valley because goods could be transported easily by boat or rail. In 1902, when Ironton moved from its original site near Mount Carmel to become part of Lima-Muncie, Brecksville lost much of its population as well as much commercial activity due to commuting time required for access to central Ohio markets during those days. Brecksville is a small town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brecksville was founded in 1827 by George Washington Breckinridge and his family. The original name of the town was "Breckinridge Heights." On January 15, 1830, George Washington Breckinridge married Catharine Beecher and they moved to Brecksville from Boston. In 1834, they had their first child: Ruth Ann Breckinridge. They also founded the Baptist church inBrecksville which still meets today. After being elected president of Ohio in 1840 and 1848, breckinridge served as an American ambassador to France during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1850, breckinridge ran for office again but this time he lost to Martin Van Buren. However, he still remains one of the most important people in town's history due to his donations to many local charities and organizations such as The Brecksville Male Seminary which still exists today and Stated Christian School which gave girls their first education outside home starting in 1865. In 1875-76 breckinbridge helped start what would become known as "The Rubber Bandits" Gang - a group of kids who would rob banks around town during prohibition times. They were finally caught after several months of planning and some nifty disguises while on vacation in Cuba

In 1830, breckville became the county seat of Hamilton County. In the 1830s, breckville had two churches and five schools. The Clear Fork Canal was built throughbrecksville in 1853 and made it easier to get goods to market. The population ofbrecksville grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s as people settled in the area for work on the new railroadroads. By 1880, breckVILLE had a total population of over 10,000 people.During World War I, Brecksville served as a military training ground for soldiers from all over Ohio. After the war ended, many people decided to stay inbrecksville and start new businesses. One example is George Hogg's grocery store which opened in 1918.In 1923, citizens ofBrecksville voted to create their own city government with its own police force and fire Department.
