In 1868, Bowling Green had only a few businesses and 50 residents. The city was named after the then-recently founded town of Bowling Green, Kentucky. It was part of the Toledo area at the time and a local trader, John Hammonds, donated land to be the new town. The first school in Bowling Green was built on First Street in 1869. In 1875, Bowling Green became an incorporated village with a population of 150 people. In 1897, Bowling Green annexed what is now Warren Township. The city's first gun target entrepreneur was George Wrinsee who opened his business in 1905 on Market Square. Wrinsee imported surplus European firearms from Germany for use in target shooting competitions and exhibitions around the United States. He also marketed his targets to farmers and businessmen as part of their agricultural marketing program. By 1915, Wrinsee's targets had become one of the most popular items available at local hobby stores across Ohio. By 1949, bowling green's population had grown to over 2,500 people and its gun target industry continued to grow into the 21st century with numerous hitches along the way including but not limited to: World War II; Korean War; The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence; Columbine High School Massacre; .22 caliber rifle ban in 1994; Economic Recession Job Losses among Target Professionals (2005).
