Bowling Green is a city in Ohio, United States. The population was 20,902 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Grant County and the most populous city in Summit County. Bowling Green is also the only municipality in Grant County with a metropolitan area population of over 100,000 people. The first settlement of Bowling Green took place on August 3, 1799 when two men named John and James Bowman founded a small town on the east side of what is now downtown Bowling Green. The town was renamed to Athens after General George Washington's army camped there during his march from Valley Forge to Yorktown in 1781. In 1814, Ohio Statehood was granted to Kentucky and Athens became part of Warren Township. On July 1, 1825, Athens changed its name back to Bowling Green due to heavy demand for the new name by residents of neighboring towns that had become known as "The Bluff" because of their high rise buildings along Main Street (now University Avenue). In 1870, four brothers - John W., David W., George H., and Daniel P - founded an agricultural journal called The Ohio Farmer which they published until it ceased publication in 1906. They also built five gristmills which still stand today: four on College Avenue (now West Broadway) and one near High School Square on First Street (now Elmwood Avenue). The first public school in Bowling Green opened on October 25, 1875; it was organized as Central High School under Superintendent Jno Aiken but renamed Columbus Academy after President Abraham Lincoln's visit to Cincinnati on November 3rd that year. On January 6th 1878 an act authorizing incorporation as a city was passed by the General Assembly of Ohio; Bowling Green became an official city on December 14th same year with 10 full members including Mayor Isaac Sowell and City Councilman Hiram Cleveland who served for three terms before retiring at age 70 years old effective February 15th 1880. - In 1886 Mayor Charles Mapes became the first mayor from outside of Grant County when he moved from Dayton to become mayor pro tem for Grant Counties extending into Bedford Township On October 8th 1907 local resident Margaret Fuller donated land adjacent to Euclid Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street west of Fifth Avenue for use as a parkland area known as Fuller Park located today near Fourth Street/Euclid Ave intersection

After joining United States in 1787 as part of Treatyof Paris following America’s defeat by France in that war, Kentucky became an American state by virtue thereof on March 15th following a referendum held within its borders that same day – thus givingKentucky full admission into both national organizations (the United States Constitution did not come into effect until January 3rd 1789). In 1814, the village of Bowling Green was organized and named in honor of General James K. Polk, who had been president during the War of 1812. The village grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River and its accessibility to transportation. By 1830, Bowling Green included a school, a church, a post office, and a sawmill. In 1850, the town of Bowling Green merged with the Village of Stroudsburg to form the Town of Bowling Green Township. In 1869, Bowling Green became an independent city after becoming one of six Ohio cities granted municipal rights by the state government.
