Bowling Green, Ohio is a small city located in the county of Butler, in the state of Ohio. It was founded by James Caldwell and his brother John Caldwell in 1795. The current name of Bowling Green derived from its location on the Great Miami River. The Caldwells were proprietors of a ferry service across the river that transported goods and passengers between their village (now known as downtown) on the south bank and Mansfield on the north bank. In 1802, Bowling Green became an incorporated town under the name of Athens. In 1834 it became a city and was renamed Bowling Green after General George Washington who had died only two years earlier at age 53. After having served as a capital for three times during the 19th century, Cincinnati took over as its permanent home in 1800 peanuts ceased being grown here until after World War II when new production began to occur in nearby Toledo due to increased demand from peanut butter manufacturers outside of America
On January 15, 1792, Bowling Green was incorporated as a town by the Ohio General Assembly. The first president of Bowling Green was John Armstrong. In 1815, the community had a population of fifty-six people and it became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil. After the American Civil War, many farmers relocated to Bowling Green from other parts of Ohio because of the good crop yields. The growth in business and population led to the incorporation of a post office in 1865. A railroad station was built in 1870 and soon thereafter, goodsargo began arriving from Cincinnati and other towns on the train. By 1902, there were twenty businesses in Bowling Green with a total payroll of $2 million. In 1918, after World War I ended, bowling green became an all-encompassing military training camp for soldiers until 1943 when it closed down due to lack of funding
