Blue Ash is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Blue Ash is located on the Scioto River at the intersection of State Route 235 and US routes 12 and 23. The first Europeans to enter what is now Muskingum County were French traders from Quebec who arrived in 1795. They named their new land "Canton de la Salle" (French for "town of the salt water"). The area around Blue Ash was inhabited by the Shawnee and other Native Americans for many centuries before white settlers started arriving in large numbers in the early 19th century. In 1814, George Washington bought 2,000 acres (810 hectares) of land just north of present-day Blue Ash from John Stephenson for $5 per acre. He named it Mount Vernon after his home state of Virginia. After Washington's death in 1826, his generals decided that Mount Vernon should be divided among them as part of an accounting settlement known as the Treaty of Greenville which ended the Seminole War between Spain and America. As part of this treaty, Spain ceded Florida to America and also received back Creek lands east of the Mississippi River including what is now Chattanooga and Atlanta. One group led by General Andrew Jackson moved into Redstone Township on Virginia soil near Chattanooga while another group led by General Jones moved into Muskingum Township near present day Blue Ash on December 14, 1830 when both towns were organized as part of Greene County under John Ziegler its first Superintendent In 1836, Josephine Brown became one of two women to receive a college degree from Brown University when she earned her Aptitude Test score higher than anymale student taking entrance exams for that university at that time In 1868-69 a major canal project called The Great Miami Canal was completed linking Cincinnati with Cleveland through much Kentucky countryside including Blue Ash where wagon trains filled up with goods weekly during its construction In 1865-66 when Ohio voted not to secede from America following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation there were several small local rebellions against this decision but these eventually petered out or were put down by Ulysses S Grant's Army before they had a chance to develop into fullblown rebellions like those seen throughout West Tennessee later that year One such rebellion began July 20th when five men armed with guns and knives walked off their job site at Whetstone Mill after being refused promotion because they were blacksmiths rather than machinists like their white peers When asked about this event later some residents claimed that they only wanted more work but others said that they didn't want anything to do with Columbus Northrup who had been elected president pro temporeof Ohio's House Of Representatives earlier that year In response Union soldiers burned down most of Whetstone Mill followed by military occupation until September 8th when all six men involvedwere arrested and charged with arson although no physical evidence ever appeared against them except public opinion which continued to support their innocence
