Blue Ash, Ohio is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the blue ash trees that line many of the streets and sidewalks. Blue Ash is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Blue Ash was made by James Crouse in 1814. It was located on what is now Elmwood Avenue. In 1825, John Trimble founded a post office in Blue Ash with seven others around central Ohio to serve settlers who had discovered new land south of Cincinnati along the Scioto River. In 1830, a mill was built on Elmwood Avenue and named Pemberton Mills after Captain John Pemberton who had led an expedition there in 1824 to purchase land for Cincinnati proper. By 1840, there were over 100 settlements in central and southern Ohio including Blue Ash with a population of 350 people. In 1845-46, an epidemic caused great destruction throughout western Ohio due to smallpox; as a result, many residents fled to central Ohio where they could live safe from disease. Due to this event and other factors such as gold rushes that began occurring throughout America during this time period (and continuing until about 1800), population growth rates throughout central and southern Ohio slowed down or stopped altogether between 1840 and 1860. However, since 1850s when railroads started running through much of America making goods available faster than ever before for economic development (and subsequently reducing travel times between states), populations have continued growing rapidly all across America; thus contributing significantly to the current sizes of some cities like Cleveland (population: 1 million) or Columbus (population: 6 million). Blue Ash experienced its heyday between 1870-1920s when it had an estimated population of 10,000 people according to one source but by 1920 it had decreased to 3200 people due mainly to increased competition from larger towns surrounding it such as Dayton and Springfield which grew rapidly during this time period thanks largely to their location on major Interstate highways connecting these regions together.
