The first store in town was opened by Hemanus Sprague in 1825. In 1837, John Sibley opened a grocery and general merchandise store at 5th and Elm Streets. In 1839, Phebe Potter opened a school for girls at 8th and Elm Streets. A hotel named Park House was built on First Street in 1880 by John Dorman, who also founded the Dayton-Cincinnati Savings Bank which still exists today as one of downtown Dayton's largest banks. In 1888, Blue Ash had its own fire department which became operational under Mayor James Fenton on September 4 that year after citizens raised $1,000 to purchase equipment necessary for the department including two horses and three engines donated by local farmers Caryl Ellis (1860-1948) and Willis Hines (1872-1941). The city of Dayton purchased all assets of the original Blue Ash Volunteer Fire Department on October 20 that year for $2,500 with plans to use it as their model for future departments throughout central Ohio while keeping it alive as an Historical Site until such time as it could be relocated elsewhere within the city limits or sold off to another community entirely.. In 1911 when America entered World War I with entry into Europe through Europe proper on April 26th (), Blue Ash residents mobilized their homes to collect food items needed for troops overseasDozens of men formed what is known today as "The Red Cross Unit" through voluntary donations picked up goods from stores like Marshall's Hardware where entire barrels were given away along with various cans filled with flour etcetera., going door to door until they collected enough supplies for every family member enlisted! This event would later become known as "The Great American Relief Drive."
