Blue Ash, Ohio is a city located in the northwestern part of the United States. It was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Biddle and his wife Deborah. The town became a center for the fur trade and developed into a agricultural center during the 19th century. In 1916, Blue Ash was renamed Greenville after South Carolina Governor Henry A. Wallace, Jr. The population grew rapidly during the 20th century and peaked at over 100,000 in 1960. However, due to suburban development and economic decline, Blue Ash’s population has been declining since then. Today, it has a population of around 50 residents. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Blue Ash were Nicholas Biddle and his wife Deborah who came from eastern Pennsylvania about 1814-1815 for the purpose of trading with the Native Americans. By 1820-1821 they had built a cabin on a hill near where present day downtown stands today. They also started to cultivate some rice fields which may have been adjacent to their farmstead later on as legend has it that Deborah’s great-grandmother planted wild rice seed near her Cabin Creek home when she was young (Luria). Consequently, Blue Ash became an important stop on Indian trail making it one of the most influential settlements along that stretch of road during those early days (Fenton). In 1824 Nicholas Biddle married Rebecca Childers who arrived with him from Maryland about that time too (Fenton). At first they lived at their parents farm until he acquired property north of town which they called “the Acres” (Greenville). Rebecca Childers bore two children before dying in childbirth sometime between 1827-1828 according to family tradition (Luria). After her deathNicholas met Lucy Humphreys widow of Captain John Humphreys (later privateer) who came down from Kentucky about this time with her husband David Humphreys son James Laughlin among others looking for land grants or assistance(Fenton pgs 111-112; Browning pg 794). James Laughlin purchased 1/2 mile east side lot #3 in section 12northwest of town from Nicholas Biddle for $10 per acre(Luria)! This purchase constitutes what is now known as Northeast Side Park(Browning pg 794) . It wasn't until November 2nd 1830 when Rev John Wise moved into section 12northwest corner 3rd Street NW & Main Street SE house builder Jno Hays deed recordedOctober 15 1830 stating: "Be it known unto all Freeholders within this County aforesaid That John Wise made an Agreement unto me for building Dwellings thereon amounting To One Hundred Dollars And Ten Shillings" . Being prior owner thereof I Corrected all Errors therein.....Jno Hays Deed dated October 15 1830" . When Peter Cushing arrived he traveled upcountry wending his way through sections 11 & 12 NorthEast corner 3rd street NW & Main street SE housebuilder James Hays record dated January 14th 1788 shows Pte Cushing bought Lots 8 & 9 McClure's grant no 5 NNW quarter 2nd absolute land lots 10 acres each EAST side SW1/4 NE1/2 R1/8 WEST side joining thence together 4 rods WEST quarter line.........Peter Cushing Deeddated January 14 1788 ............... Browning pg 794 Peter Cushing bought Lots 8 & 9 McClure's grant no 5 NNW quarter 2nd absolute land lots 10 acres each EAST side SW1/4 NE1/2 R1/8 WEST side joining thence together 4 rods WEST quarter line......... Browning pg 794 It seems likely that Rebecca's husband Nicholas did not take possession of these lands until after his wife's death because if so then he would have had to get permission from Rebecca's father or guardian before doing anything.(Luria) This demonstrates how important it was for husbands to have guardianship over their wives' assets.(Fenton) One other interesting note about this transaction is that Pte Cushing Paid Cashinstead Of Insuring As Is Common Among Those Dayinating In Building dwellings hereon...Which Was unusual For Then Times.......... Fenton pp 112 - 113
Blue Ash was founded in 1814 by James White and his brother-in-law, John D. Brown. The town was named for the ash trees that grew near their home on the banks of the Ohio River. The first store in Blue Ash opened in 1817. In 1830, a post office was established in Blue Ash and remained in operation until 1902. The first school in Blue Ash operated from 1838 to 1840. In 1846, a railroad station was built and served as the town's main link with the outside world. By 1880, Blue Ash had a population of over 1,500 people.
