Bexley, Ohio is a city in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,428 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Bexley was founded in 1811 as a village on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River by Nicholas Bexley and others. The first post office was established in 1812. The name "Bexley" originated from an Indian word meaning "broad meadow". The town site was chosen because it could be easily watered by the Cuyahoga River. A ferry operated from Canfield Landing on the west bank of the river to provide access to this land for transportation and trade. Early residents were farmers who raised corn, beans, potatoes, onions, and other vegetables for export to Great Britain and other parts of Europe. In 1871, when Hardin County was formed from part of Lucas County, Bexley became its county seat. In 1907, a group of civic leaders led by Mayor John Witherspoon voted to rename Bexley after Edwin Howard Payne Sr., one of their own citizens who had unsuccessfully run for Congress as a Democrat in 1902. Payne's father had been born in Ireland and immigrated to America in 1853; his mother came later from Scotland via Ellis Island. When Payne ran for Congress on a ticket with Congressman Abram Brown (then serving as Ohio's attorney general), he won election but lost his term due to term limits set by Congress at that time. After Payne's defeat, he moved back home to Cleveland where he died in 1916 at age 83 years old.) The current downtown area around US-31/State Route 6 began settlement near what is now Canfield Landing during the early 1800s when people traveled downriver each week taking advantage of easy access to water resources through canals dug into the banks of the river

Bexley is a village in the Ottawa-Fayette County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bexley's ZIP code is 49501. The Village of Bexley was founded in 1851 as a suburb of Cincinnati by Major General John Covington and his family. In 1865, when Dayton became an independent city, Bexley became its first town and remained so until 1959. The village's name comes from the nearby Bexhill Hill estate which was once one of the most affluent in Ohio. In 1851 Captain John Fenton purchased what is now known as "Fenton Grant", located on Goudy Street east of downtown Dayton (then called Walnut Grove). He built a small log cabin here that served as his home for many years while he developed land around it. In 1865 Captain Fenton sold his property to James Auld who erected a large brick house on it which still stands today as the Village Hall and Masonic Lodge Building (now part of Wright State University). In 1875 James Laidlaw acquired 640 acres west of Bexley and two miles south of present day Delaware Avenue from David Sibley for $1 million dollars ($ ). This land formed what is now known as Mifflin Township with only 3% ownership by any person other than Laidlaw himself! The township boundaries were changed several times over the years but at its peak had 6,000 residents in 1890! Today much of this area has been annexed by other municipalities including Germantown to the north and Byron Heights to the south. The first post office in BexLEY opened on November 12th, 1875 under the name "Newburgh". It lasted six months before being moved to Dayton due to objections from local citizens! The current post office building – now known as "Olde Post Office" – was completed in 1902 just two blocks away from where Captain Fenton's original cabin stood! In 1896 Rev John Prentice organized what would become First Baptist Church (later called First Methodist) within minutes of opening his doors! Reverend Prentice served until 1912 when he died suddenly after serving for 10 years!. One interesting fact about this early period in village history: All school district services were provided through Mr J H Baker’s store on High Street until 1907 when all school District functions were centralized into Beechwood Elementary School!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bexley was founded in 1803 by John Bexley and his brother, James. The brothers were farmers and the town was founded on a farm they owned. In 1825, the town was named after Major General George Washington because of its location near the Battle of Yorktown. In 1868, the town became a borough. In 1932, Bexley merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form the city of Arlington Heights-Bexley.
