Bexley, Ohio is a city in the easternmost part of Cleveland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Cleveland County after Quaker Heights and lies on the southern edge of downtown Cleveland. The first residents of what is now Bexley were some of the first Europeans to set foot in what is now Cleveland County. They were Feedback mechanics working for Colonel John Fenton on his survey of the area which included present-day Bexley Township. In 1814, James Mapes built a small log cabin near today's intersection of State Route 60 and Superior Avenue. By 1840 there were several other log cabins along that same route as well as a few buildings around Superior Avenue. In 1845, Irish immigrants Paddy O'Neill and his family moved from Dublin to begin their farmstead at what is today's corner of Superior Avenue and University Road. A year later they started trading goods with Indians living east of them along the Sandusky River at their current site where I-480 meets US Highway 22 today. This early trade led to many settlers coming to this area including John Hoadly who opened up a grocery store on Superior Avenue in 1857; Wm Crain who founded Crain & Company Hardware Store in 1861; George Sieving who established Sieving Machine Works in 1865; Jno Stephenson who became one of America's leading entrepreneurs with his establishment of Stephenson Manufacturing Company (now known as McMaster) in 1868; Asa Gray who came to town as an indentured servant from New York City in 1870; GEOFFREY CRANE who bought land adjacent to present day Bexley from Henry Ford soon after he founded Crane Manufacturing Company there about 1880s;and CHARLES SCHMIDT who purchased lots adjoining present day Bexley from Michael Dolan about 1890s). After European settlement began, religion played an important role here too with early churches being erected around schools or churches that had been organized by groups like Methodists and Presbyterians before those denominations merged into Congregationalism during American independence period (see also: List of churches located in Bexley ). Bexley was founded in 1814 as a small community on the eastern side of Cleveland, by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Child. The town became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century, with cotton mills and other businesses built along the river that now forms its border.
