The first European to visit Bexley was Nicholas Perrot in 1688 and he named it Beekshire after his friend and patron, Sir Hugh Beekman. William Petty settled here in 1795 and built a home called Bellevue on what is now North Main Street. In 1821, John Adams moved from Cincinnati to become president of the United States and soon had another property developed here called Cedar Hill on what is now East Main Street. He died there just before Thanksgiving that year and was buried next to his wife Martha at Laurel Hill Cemetery. They had two children – John Quincy Adams (1825-1901) who served as Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of State during Reconstruction, and Frances Parkman Adams (1828-1920). John Quincy Adams became one of America’s most powerful politicians because he could use his connections to get things done for Bexley residents like getting an improved water system put into place or getting better schools built - even if they didn’t have money themselves! Their daughter Abigail Adams Polk also became an important political figure in her own right when she served as First Lady of the United States under President Franklin D Roosevelt (1932-1945). In 1963, Bexley formally recognized its ties with Akron by adopting a resolution recognizing “the long history and friendly relations between these two cities which began with their common adherence to Americanism against British tyranny” There are still many reminders of this past connection including various artifacts from Akron such as key chains, buttons and mugs made by local businesses during this time period. James Moulton surrendered his forces at Plattsburgh Naval Air Station to Japanese troops under Lt.-Colonel Tadasu Hashimoto. This event is known as "The Day The Earth Stood Still." After World War II ended, many businesses and residents relocated to Cleveland because of increased competition from nearby Akron and Canton. However, some residents decided to stay in Bexley and continue to grow crops and Manufacture products such as bicycles and houses until the late 1990s when a recession hit the area hard and prices for housing began to rise again

By 1836, Bexley had a population of over 200 people. In 1847, the town's first school was built and operated for three years. In 1848, a dam was constructed in the town and water became available for irrigation. The town continued to grow during the 1850s, thanks to new industry and transportation improvements. By 1860, Bexley had a population of about 1,000 people. During this time, construction began on what is now known as downtown Bexley. This project included the creation of streets and buildings as well as infrastructure such as sewers and water pipes. The downtown area quickly became one of the most important business districts in Ohio. In 1870, Bexley annexed neighboring unincorporated communitiesite within minutes of each other
