Bexley, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio with a population of just over 7,000 people as of the 2010 census. The town is located in Summit County and was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1806. Bexley is one of the few remaining original settlements on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and has been part of Summit County since 1837. The town's name comes from "bex" meaning cloth or rugs and "-ley" meaning a place to dwell or an encampment. In 1837, some settlers decided to move into what would become Bexley because they thought it would be better situated for farming than their previous location on the Lower Peninsula. The first settler in Bexley was John Doherty, who purchased three acres (1 hectare) of land in 1838 from Nicholas Lowry. Doherty built a log cabin on his property and named it Bexley House after himself and his wife Becca. In 1840, David Ladd bought two more acres (1 hectare) from Doherty and began to build a house on them called Ladd's Cabin which still stands today as part of the community center complex that forms the core business district around Main Street in Bexley today. Ladd became headmaster at nearby Scioto Township School District #5 when he bought the property there in 1842 and started to use it for school purposes only. In 1865, following Indian Removal, most of what is now Bexley developed as part of neighboring Unadilla Township when that township was created from parts of Scioto Township and Ottawa Township respectively following the end OF Indian removalutilities eastward across Union County line into new territory under Ulysses S Grant administration The first organized person in what would become Bexley was Methodist minister Elijah Hickson who filed a plat for land grant along Main Street on December 5th, 1846 with State Senator Isaac Niles Hickson later served as justice of peace for Summit County until his death on April 1st, 1850 Hickkinson's grant included 3½ miles (5 km) west side along White Oak Road between present day Eckert Avenue and Irontown Road near where Interstate 80 crosses Route 66 today; present day North Side Drive between West Ridge Boulevard/Whiteoak Road intersection (now Barker Avenue)and Myron Line Drive intersecting at Ridge Boulevard were also granted . After Hickkinson’s death Presbyterian minister Jeremiah Wright began preaching services here soon afterwards This early church building still stands visible across Eckert Ave., opposite current day Kresge Arena ] The first post office opened here November 11th1847 under name “Eckert” before being changed to “BEXLEY” February 16th1849] On July 4th1850 local residents gathered together outside newly established Post Office seeking redress for treatment they had received while living eastbound on US 27 past Cuyahoga Falls Destruction Act boundary where millowners had taken possession without compensation from federal government – note: this event took place about 2 hours prior to actual fire that destroyed buildings within Post Office complex ] A meeting was then held at Divine Love Baptist Church which resulted in organizing society into appropriate legal entity known as Mechanics Institute October 10th 1850 ]. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, Bexley began to experience significant decline as factories closed and unemployment rates rose. Today, however, Bexley remains an important community with strong economic ties to its surrounds.
