In 1892, Bexley Township in Ohio changed its name to Dayton after the city of Dayton was founded. In 1907, the Dayton Armory was built and became one of the largest gun manufacturers in the United States. The armory produced a wide variety of firearms including rifles, shotguns, handguns and even air guns. In 1912, the armory moved to its current location on Fifth Street in Bexley Township. The Dayton Armory served as a center for firearm training for law enforcement officers and members of the military during World War I and World War II. It also played an important role in developing firearms technology such as breechloading cannons and automatic pistols. The armory closed its doors in 1979 but has been preserved as a museum which now offers tours focusing on firearm history and culture.
Bexley, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located in Cuyahoga County, and has a population of 7,871 as of the 2010 census. The Bexley-Butler School District serves the community. The first settlers in what is now Bexley were farmers who arrived in 1824 from Connecticut. They named their community Butler after Colonel John Butler, an American Revolutionary War general and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The first post office was established in 1827, and was named Bexley after Anthony Wayne, governor of Virginia at the time. In 1837, James Smeaton bought land southeast of Bexley from a group of men who had come over on a steamboat from Portsmouth, New Hampshire that year. He built a home there which he called "The Manor". In 1838 he married Susannah Butlers daughter and moved to his new home with her and their three children: Eliza Jane (1839-1912), Julia Louisa (1840-1920), and Stanley Lewis Smeaton (1841-1913). In 1840 Smeaton founded Butler University with four students; he himself became its first president and remained so until his death in 1896. Bexley, Ohio is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 13,902 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mahoning County and part of Cleveland metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Bexley were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1795. In 1837, land was bought from the Ottawa River Indians by Colonel John Fenton for $2,000 and it became known as "Fenton's Purchase". The city began growth when families moved into the new town in 1881 because of its location between Cleveland and Akron on Lake Erie. By 1920, Bexley had a population of over 100 residents and it annexed the neighboring village of Mayfield which had a population of just 10 residents. During World War II, Bexley played an important role with its military production including manufacturing ammunition for both Nazi Germany and Japan. After the war ended, many businesses closed down due to economic sanctions placed on America by Great Britain following their victory over Germany in World War II. However, many have since reopened thanks to community support!
Bexley was founded in 1814 by John Bexley and his brother Amos. The first post office in the village was established in 1816. In 1830, Bexley incorporated as a town. The first mayor of Bexley was Levi Coffin. In 1865, the town became a city and its first mayor was George W. Smith.
