Bexley is a small town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,327 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The name "Bexley" comes from the French word bignon meaning "auckle". The first European to visit Bexley was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. A landing party of about twenty men and boys founded a trading post on what is now Morehouse Park Road in 1692 by Capt. George Moncrieffe. By 1800 there were two stores, thirteen homes and 350 residents living on land that includes present-day Bexley High School, Morehouse Park Golf Course, and Chautauqua Lake. In 1802 John Clark donated 2 miles (3 km) of road from his farmstead at Greenlawn to create a village square which became home to the first school in Bexley Township on May 4th 1802; this was also called Claiborne Square after General Jacob Chautauqua who had come to preach revolution at the square in 1801. In 1814 services were offered for Methodists by Revs. Jno Widdowson and Ebenezer Scudder at what is now First Baptist Church before being moved to their current location in 1828 across from Firestone Tire & Rubber Company headquarters (now part of Nationwide Mutual Insurance). On October 1st 1840 David Ladd erected a log cabin as an Episcopal Episcopalian church south of present-day Second Baptist Church for worshiping slaves under the name "African Methodist Episcopal Zion." Reverend Elijah Hicks officiated during services until his retirement from ministry on April 10th 1865 when Reverend Edward Hutton took over responsibility for African Methodist Episcopal Zion services until its absorption into African Methodist Episcopal Church upon Elijah Hicks' death four years later on November 3rd 1870; both Revs EH and HH are buried near each other east of Scott's Run Cemetery off Perry Rd./Highways 422/423). In 1898–99 three brothers – James A., John P., and Daniel Soderlund – built a millrace dams upstream from their family’s log cabin known as “The Gables” which formed today’s northeast corner of Morehouse Park Road between Erie Canal Boulevard/Highway 827E and Wright Parkway/Highway 9 north of Village Square (now Bexley High School), providing water power for local mills starting with James A.'s dam No. 1 soon followed by John P.'s dam No 2 then Daniel Soderlund's dam No 3 which provided power for several smaller mills including presumably those still extant along Morehouse Park Road today such as De Marchi's Paper Mill #1 just northeast side Wright Parkway opposite Village Square), thence via Underground Railroad connections back upriver past today’s Village Square where they connected with the main line coming out of Dayton going eastward through Akron where it crossed into Pennsylvania near US 62/Turkey Creek before continuing southeastward into Ohio near Lebanon Conservation Area outside Dayton just inside US 36W border with Kentucky; this system enabled families formerly located around The Gables or nearby creek banks experiencing economic hardship throughout central Ohio to be supplied with clean water without having to leave their homes – something that continues to this day thanks in part again to Mr James A.'s widow Mildred who operate her own small mill located adjacent Highway 827E just northwest side Wright Parkway opposite Villa Square). Today many descendants continue operating local businesses dating back centuries including: First National Bank (1911), Mardahl Naturals (1993), Great Lakes Brewing Company Incorporated (2006), Euclid Chevrolet Sales KOA Service Center(2002) all within more than one mile radius surrounding TheVillageSquare neighborhood currently containing more than 300 businesses employing some 5,000 people manufacturing goods ranging from cars and trucks to kitchen appliances; furthermore these businesses have collectively generated more than $100 billion worth of economic activity within Greater Columbus since 2001 contributing significantly not only financially but also culturally & emotionally Telling our story has become increasingly important given our city& county today faces significant challenges including: numerous large suburban development projects adjacent & across I-675; lack Of affordable housing statewide making it difficult For many low income citizens To access quality healthcare despite efforts made by both government & private providers including hundreds Of thousandsOf new jobs flowing INTO THE CITY FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTY NEW BUSINESS PARK AND MUCH MORE…. Bexley, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Clark County. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The city was founded by John Bexley in 1824 as a small village on the Scioto River northwest of Toledo. In 1836, it became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with other towns in Clark County to form the Toledo-Miamisburg Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The name "Bexley" comes from John Bexel's farmstead on Big Beaver Creek which he bought in 1793 from Nicholas Biddle. In 1830, surveyor George Stephenson laid out a plan for what would become Bexley Township on land that he had purchased just east of present-day Bexleyrand Road and east of contemporary Centerville Road. He named it after his friend Sir George Everest who had been British Ambassador to China during the Opium Wars. The township was established on July 1, 1830, and served as an agricultural center until annexation by Toledo in 1836 made it part of Toledo proper. The first post office in Bexley opened in 1838; its name has changed several times over its history but always included "BEXLEY". A store and post office were built near present day Centerville Road corner Big Beaver Creek Drive and Menard Avenue around 1840s; both buildings are gone now but their foundations remain extant as part of Centerville Road's street grid today. At this time, most mail was delivered into downtown Toledo via wagon or horseback ride to local farmers’ homes where they were then sorted and sent off to different parts of the country through their mail carriers using wagons or horse teams pulled by oxen or donkeys pulling carts filled with letters addressed to various people throughout America including members of Congress – one such early carrier was Amos Stroud who transported messages between Washington D C and Youngstown while acting as courier for James Kintner Railway construction arrived in central Ohio during this time period with construction starting on the Morrilton Branch Railroad inside present day Lucasville before continuing northward into what is now Clark County including what is now Bexley Township along with portions of Medina, Trumbull and Portage Counties across the way Replacing horses drawn wagons with railroad locomotives allowed for faster shipping times allowing products such as cotton ginners raw materials needed for making finished items like fabrics to reach marketplaces much sooner than if they had been transported by handcart or wagon
In 1813, settlers in what is now Bexley, Ohio founded the town on a tract of land that had been purchased from the Miami Indians. The town was named for British general and explorer George Washington Bexley. In 1836, the Erie Canal was completed and allowed transportation between the Great Lakes and Ohio River. This increased business activity in Bexley and led to new development including a sawmill, gristmill, store, post office, school and other businesses. The population of Bexley peaked at around 100 people in 1870 but declined following World War I. After the war, new residents moved into the town and it slowly lost its importance as a commercial center. However, it still retains some historical landmarks such as the old courthouse which is located downtown.
