The present day shopping center and small industrial park located south of town was built in 1954 by local developer George Wetherington as a way to increase tourism in the area and attract more businesses to local commerce overall. On July 16th, 2009 an EF-4 tornado touched down near milepost 283 on US-131 just north of town about 15 miles east of Cleveland; it caused significant damage but no fatalities or injuries
