Bexley is a city in Greater Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,869 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cleveland after Cleveland Heights. The first settler in what is now Bexley was George Wessels, who arrived on July 6, 1796. He named his new community for himself and his wife Augusta (née Beal). In 1801, John Beal founded Beal & Company of Cincinnati with some land he had acquired from Wessels. The company became one of the largest farmers in the area and prospered until 1857 when it went bankrupt due to overspending on goods produced by its large farmlands. In 1828 a group of German immigrants called "Hammerschmidts" bought 640 acres (247 ha) near what is now Bexleyrand Road from Nicholas Forman for $5 per acre ($2 per sq ft). They began to develop this land into a town with an initial population of 507 people. By 1830 they had reached 2200 residents and by 1840 they had increased their population to 4000. This growth continued until 1890 when all but two of the original hamlet's buildings were destroyed by fire during a severe weather event known as the Great Lakes Ice Storm; only three remain standing today: Grosse Pointe-Eastman Place (now part of University Circle), Highland Avenue (now Euclid Avenue), and Main Street (now Milliken Avenue). The Hamlet Association established itself in 1830 to promote development within the limits set for them by virtue of their political power as landowners adjacent to downtown; it did not succeed until 1862 when Trustee Enoch Pratt created a board that would manage property within the limits of Bexleytown Township adjoining Cuyahoga County without having access to township funds or elected officials. In 1859 developer Lorenzo Sawyer purchased 5500 acres (20 km2) north of present day Bexley comprising much of what is now Defiance Township including parts owned by Brush & Company which operated a transportation hub on Sandusky Bayou before becoming part of Erie Railroad ownership in 1881 (). Sawyer renamed his tract Perrysburg after General George Washington Perry who fought against British forces during the American Revolution (). He commercialized this land through lumbering and farming activities that led to impressive profits which he used originally to improve road conditions throughout central Ohio while also funding various civic improvements including schools, churches and other public works projects between 1870-1920 such as building new larger bridges across Sandusky Bayou just east of modern day Defiance Township line although no bridge remains extant today visible from I-90 or US 25 / Isambard Kingdom Brunel Drive as well as many water systems built during this time period including those Crossroads Dam () formerly known as Sibley Lake (), Waterloo Dam (), McLoughlin Dam ()) onceknown as North Bend Lake(), Erie Canal Dam (), Bellefontaine Dam (), Big Sandy Lake (), Whitehall Dam () onceknown as Westburgh lakeshore

Bexley is a town in Warren County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the large city of Cleveland. Bexley was founded in 1814 by Peter Palfrey and others as an unincorporated community on the Scioto River. The name derived from "bex" (a type of beans) and "ley" (a small stream). The first post office was established in 1815, and the first store opened in 1830. A school was built in 1836, and a church was erected in 1840. The town became part of Cleveland after it was annexed by that city on April 14, 1907. Bexley had a population of 2,912 when it joined Cleveland; its current population is 3,152.[1] After being annexed by Cleveland, Bexley lost much of its manufacturing base due to consolidation within the larger city but has regained some notable businesses such as Wittenberg Paper Company and Geico Insurance Corporation which are headquartered there today.
