Berea, Ohio is a small town in Summit County, Ohio. The population was 1,971 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Berea was Levi Ellis who arrived in 1814. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. In 1827, John Hays laid out a road from Akron to Berea and named it after himself. In 1848, George Fenton bought land east of Berea and began to build a large ranch house known as Fenton's House. The town name "Berea" was chosen by the trustees of Fenton's Ranch when they decided on a new name for their community. In 1896, Jeptha Stephens built an addition to his home at 5th and Euclid Streets which became called Stephens' House after him. The first post office opened in Berea on October 15, 1892 with Elisha Whelan as its first supervisor. The town annexation occurred in 1901 and incorporation took place on March 30 that same year under the name of "Berea". The first school was constructed in 1903 by Mrs. Lizzie Rector and Mrs. Averill Putnam as Mennonite Academy #1 which served students until 1916 when it moved to its present location at 711 Elm Street NW where it remains today. A fire destroyed most of downtown Berea on December 3rd, 1904 destroying much valuable inventory including furniture from old buildings dating back to 1828-1829! However, this did not discourage residents from rebuilding their businesses aroundthe central business district that included one grocery store (now closed), three pharmacies (now all gone), two clothing stores (both closed), two hardware stores (both now defunct), four restaurants including two Chinese restaurants open for about fifty years each before closing down due to health concerns; one still operates as an institutionally licensed bar & grill; five churches were also burned during that night: First Congregational Church - rebuilt following the fire; Second Baptist Church - rebuildable but never completed; Third Methodist Church - already standing prior to fire; Fourth Presbyterian Church - only building remaining pre-fire destruction; Fifth Baptist Church - also rebuilt following fire but never completed.; Seventh-day Adventist church also lost much property during 1904 fire but has since been reconstructed.; Wesleyan Methodist Chapel predate modern day Berea by over sixty years and can still be seen intact acrossishop street just north of I-580 exit 25W., west off State Route 422E.).
