Berea, Ohio was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his wife Martha. The town was named for Berea, in central Scotland, where Washington's father had been born. The first settler in the town was James Hance. In 1802, the village of Berea formed from part of the town of Smithfield. In 1813, a post office was established at Berea with John Maynard as its first U.S. Postmaster General. That year, Congress passed the act providing for a congressional district in Ohio and Berea became part of it. In 1816-1817, Battle Creek County was created from parts of Battle Creek Township and Perry Township to include all of Brownsville Township east of the Scioto River within its boundaries; this area now includes much of Berea and parts of University Heights and Arlington Heights neighborhoods on the south side of Cleveland Avenue between 86th Street and 88th Street). On March 3, 1819-20 in response to what seemed to be an effort by Pro Tempore Augustus Mifflin (D-Ohio) to consolidate all "savage" counties into one large community under his control – which he called "Mifflinland" – a group led by John Fenton bought land parcels northward from Cleveland along Euclid Avenue from Nicholas Brown for $800 per acre (the price had been raised to $1,200 after Brown's death). On November 7 that year, Fenton erected a small stone structure known as 'The eligibility House' on what is now First Avenue North near Saginaw Road (now North High School), which served as an early courthouse and eventually housed the county government’s offices until 1906 when they were moved to East Side Hall on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland. In 1830-31 during Andrew Jackson's presidency there were several outbreaks or uprisings throughout the United States caused by anti-democratic beliefs aroused by events such as Jackson's order banning slavery in any state west of Missouri without previous written consent from both freeholders and slaves; some have suggested that these disorders may have been related directly or indirectly to Berea because many residents there sympathized with abolitionists who opposed Jacksonian policies including their efforts to expand slavery into new states such as Ohio Territory despite his assurances that no slaveholders would be affected thereby. However historians generally discount this connection because no evidence exists linking either party specifically with any particular incidents or communities during those years in America; instead they attribute most events occurring during this time period simply to general social unrest caused by rapid economic changes brought about by technological advances like steamboats transportation over water while also experiencing evolving political values/actions across multiple countries around the world leading up towards American independence. Nevertheless following President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal programs which aimed To halt economic decline faced nationwide during World War II through initiatives such as reducing unemployment benefits payments given out directly to workers instead through banks]; those same programs led gradually but surely towards increased regulation & taxation especially when implemented retrospectively onto businesses owners rather than earlier when it could have cushioned them & allowed them more time (& money)to prepare themselves before hard times hit | Eventually housing prices began bubble then burst due largely thereto: #bereaunitedstateshistory
