There is no one answer to the question of where Berea, Ohio got its name. The city was founded in 1825 by George Washington and his son-in-law, James K. Polk, as a small community on the Scioto River. In 1836, the city was renamed after John Berea, an Ohio congressman who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first holster company in Berea was established in 1851 by J.D. Payne and Wm. Hays. The industry quickly grew and by 1865 there were more than 30 holster companies operating in Ohio alone. By 1890, however, leather holster manufacturing had collapsed due to competition from firearms manufacturers such as Colt and Winchester. In 1954, Berea became the first city in Ohio to ban handguns altogether following a spate of shootings that year involving handguns. At that time it was considered a pioneering move for Cleveland – at the time it was second only to New York City – and helped spur gun control efforts across the nation during the 1950s and 1960s.

Berea, Ohio is a small town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town is derived from Berea Township in Champaign County, Illinois. The first settler in Berea was Abram Whipple and his family who arrived on October 12, 1812. David Parks settled here in 1830 and patented 640 acres (24 km²). He named it after himself: David Parson’s Creek Settlement or Parkesburg Settlement. In 1833 Ezekiel Stroud moved to Berea from Chillicothe and homesteaded on land that had been donated by Nathan Cooksey. Andrew McDonald followed suit two years later. By 1840 there were eighteen families living in Berea with a total of 143 acres (6 km²). In 1846 John Auld purchased 2,081 acres (8 sq mi) for $10 per acre ($2 million today). He founded the city of Akron and named it after himself: Anson Auld’sTownship or Steel City Township. On July 1st of that year he divided his property into lots which became known as blocks or precincts each worth $1000 cash or one dollar per lot to be contributed towards township expenses which would then be paid by annual assessments levied on all landowners within their precinct according to their assessed value computed at that time before public records were kept of township boundaries The first block voting took place on this date at 7 p.m.. He also donated land east of Turtle Lake for townsite development but this project never got offthe ground due to lack of interest by early settlers Nine miles west along the same route located now between Ashtabula County line and Shaker Heights they met another problem when Elijah Howe came here with four horses he said could take him “anywhere he wanted to go” so they started out building a road near where Lakeshore Boulevard now stands only to find out how much water could be stored under those hillsides without becoming swampy
Berea, Ohio was founded in 1796 by William and Mary Berea. The town was named for the Berea location in Kentucky where the Bereas had a farm. The town grew rapidly due to its position on the main route between Cincinnati, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1802, the Erie Canal was completed and opened up new markets for Berea. The growth of the town continued and in 1824, the first school building was built. In 1829, a canal connecting Toledo with Cleveland was completed and increased traffic drew people to Berea. By 1850, there were 4 schools in Berea and it had a population of 10,000 people. During the 19th century, many industries grew in Berea including lumbering and shipbuilding. In 1865, an electric railway line was constructed through town which made it easier for people to get around without having to walk or ride horses
