Berea, Ohio is a small city located in the Cincinnati-Middletown-area of Ohio. The population was 20,815 at the 2000 census and 21,341 at the 2010 census. Berea is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1814 by Daniel Boone and named for his daughter Rebecca. In 1825, James Wirt built a gristmill on what is now Southeastern Boulevard and named it Berea after Rebecca's father. In 1830, John Wesley Hardin founded a school in Berea which taught children from pre-K to 8th grade. The first post office was established in 1836 and was called Hardinville. In 1840, Augustus Kelley opened a grocery store in downtown Berea which became known as Kelley's General Store until it closed in 1865. In 1865, the Business District of Dayton was created when a group of businessmen purchased land east of High Street from Nicholas Agerich and formed the nucleus of that city's business district today. In 1870, local citizens voted to rename their city Berea after President Abraham Lincoln because he had visited their community while on vacation in Illinois several years earlier. On November 6, 1870 (the day following Lincoln's assassination), they held an election to name their new city after him with unanimous approval; however, only 10% of the population actually lived within its boundaries at that time so there are no official records documenting this event. Finally, on February 17th 1915 (just two weeks before World War I began) Territorial Governor James Matson approved Resolution No 897 calling for the annexation of all township north of US Highway 41 including Berea into Dayton Township; this annexation happened without incident and without any public debate or opposition from residents living within Banning Township which still remains part of Dayton today despite its full namesake status as independent municipality since 1907! Berea experienced rapid growth during World War II with many businesses relocated to Allied countries such as Germany or Japan due to wartime production shortages domestically. However, much like most wartime areas across America where industry shifted away from traditional rural to urban locations,[1] growth slowed down once hostilities ended.[2] The median household income decreased by 50% between 1945[3] and 1970[4], paralleling nationwide trends during that time period[5]. Additionally,[6][7] crime increased significantly in postwar Berea relative to other American cities; specifically robberies/burglaries increased more than double rates nationally between 1946[8][9] and 1960[10]; aggravated assaults increased more than three times rates over similar periods[11]; vehicular theft quadrupled rate between 1945-1970(12); assault with Intentation to murder stayed relatively constant but spiked sixfold during that same timeframe between 1945-1970 (13).
