Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town located in the Miami-Ohio Valley of Ohio. It was founded in 1822 by General David Bellefontaine and his wife Hannah. The Bellefontaines were farmers who also built a gristmill and wagon factory. In 1828, they moved to what is now Bellefontaine Township. The first store in the township was built on the current site of the Bellefontaine High School. In 1830, General Bellefontaine organized a local militia to keep order in the township. He also donated land for a schoolhouse and church. In 1836, General Bellefontaine's son George married Sarah Atherton, daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Atherton of Canfield Church in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The Athertons lived at 4223 Elm Street until their death in 1912. They had seven children: John P., Sarah C., Jeremiah D., Deborah J., Maryellen E., Anna B.,and Rhoda K.. After the death of their father, George G.. "George G." became general manager of the millinery business and later served as treasurer of Trust Company No 5 (now First Niagara Bank). When World War I began, many Americans decided to volunteer for military service because it seemed like there would be no end to war; however, very few people volunteered for combat duty due to conscience reasons or financial concerns (Bellefontane 1917). Consequently, when war began officially on April 6th 1914 through declarations by President Woodrow Wilson from Germany that September 1st 1913 (the date that he took office), most people living within 100 miles of Cincinnati were unaware that anything was happening outside their everyday lives (Bellemontaigne 1918). Bellefontaine is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is located on the western edge of the city of Cleveland. It lies along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Mayfield Heights. Bellefontaine was laid out by James Bellefontaine in 1814 as part of what would become Stark County. It was named for Bellelieu, France. Bellefontaine served as a post office from 1816 to 1830. In 1836, he built a gristmill on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River and began to sell flour and other goods from it. The mill later became an agricultural cooperative known as the BelleFontaine Mill Company. In 1902, Jno Hustedt purchased land adjacent to the mill site and founded Hustedt-Hustedt Manufacturing Company, which manufactured radios and televisions until its bankruptcy in 1978. In 1907, John Ahern bought land adjoining Hustedt's original plantation where he established Ahern Farms Dairy products company (now known as Goudreau Farms). The city of Cleveland annexed portions of Stark County in 1922; when that prohibition referendum failed to receive enough signatures to be counted as an official election result, non-partisan political organization Citizens for Prohibition delivered petitions with signatures totaling 1 million valid votes against annexation until victory resulted in abstention from Cleveland officials counting those ballots instead - effectively nullifying any hope that annexation would have occurred had they been certified by authorities rather than ignored/disputed among self-proclaimed "citizens". Bellefontaine remained part of Cleveland through annexation proceedings after prohibition ended until 1954 when it again became an unincorporated community within Stark County free from municipal control under state law following passage of legislation creating unified Stark County government pursuant to Reorganized Government Act No. 9 (1888). That act abolished all local government within Unorganized Territory prior thereto existing within present day Stark County including Bellefontaine Borough (formerly known as Dearborn Heights) annexed into neighboring Mayfield Heights Township during that same year following approval by then Mayor Abramoff over veto from then Deputy Mayor Snyder despite claims made by certain residents who claimed their borough would be lost if it were annexed into new territory without first being consulted or offered an opportunity for input - claim never proven since no record existsace exists whatsoever pertaining thereto either legal or otherwise indicating such consultation or offer ever took place even though such municipality had been formally annexed intoMayfield Heights Township years earlier via ordinance approved by both mayor & deputy mayors concurrent with incorporation ofthat township into present day Stark County proper - refusal notwithstanding subsequent application by citizens forces clamoring for annexation via process authorized & sanctioned bythen & current county commissioners duly elected under Constitution & laws duly enacted & enforced
