It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine's history can be traced back to 1836 when developer John Davenport donated land for an agricultural college that would become Bellefontaine University. In 1865, Bellefontaine was incorporated as a village and began to grow as a farming community with close-knit families and mills on the river. By 1890, Bellefontaine had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with businesses such as Pritchard's Furniture Company, J.B. Henschel & Sons machine shop, and Gossamer Gear Works producing goods such as quilts and saddles. However, during World War I production slowed due to wartime shortages; however, by 1920 Bellefontaine had resumed its traditional role of a rural community with farms and mills dotting the landscape. During the late 19th century and early 20th century large numbers of immigrants from southern Italy arrived in Bellefontaine seeking work in agriculture or other trades during their coming-of-age process; these Italians are often credited with playing an important role in shaping Bellefontainian culture into what it is today. Many Italian men also entered into American military service during World War I; some became generals or admirals while others managed small businesses or worked their way up throughthe ranks within their unit or company until they reached Lieutenant colonel status or higher (an event which is commemorated annually by hosting an annual 5K race around Campus Stadium).
