Bellefontaine was a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It was located on the border of the towns of Bellefontaine and Dayton. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Bellefontaine began as a Methodist settlement in 1814. The name comes from the French word " BELFORT " meaning "fortress." In 1835, Bellefontaine became part of Dayton Township. In 1837, it became part of Summit County. The post office at Bellefontaine was established in 1838. Bellefontaine had a schoolhouse and one store when it Became an incorporated village in 1846 under the name of Dayton Village. A railroad station was built there in 1870-71 by the Dayton and Cincinnati Railroad Company, which served as its main entrance into town until 1915 when it opened up to traffic on the Scioto Valley Railroad. The village had two churches until 1860 when they were replaced by one each with Gothic Revival architecture from New York City architect John A Strotherman Jr.. That same year saw the first professional football game played in America between Bellefontaine and Mentor (now Arlington Heights) High School while both villages were still unincorporated communities; Bellefontain lost 20-3 to Mentor that day according to records kept by William Husted who also refereed that game. In 1861-62, Warrick McKinney began operating a feed mill at what is now north end of Main Street in BelleFontaine which became an important local industry supplying flour for mills all over Summit County until 1965 when people stopped using it because of pollution caused by large scale manufacturing near where it operated until then including his son’s company - McKinney Feed Mills Incorporated - closed operations due to emissions standards set forth by state environmental regulators following passage of legislation known as “The Great Lakes Basin Protection Act” or “GLBA” implementing principles similar to those governing power plants initiated by President Lyndon B Johnson during his last term as president with signature “Great Lakes Restoration Initiative” administration action following enactment effective July 1st 1976 with Executive Order No., EO 9636 issued May 9th 1978 extending authority necessary for Federal regulation leading ultimately to present day State law regulating air quality within territorial waters off Northwestern Michigan area adjacent to Lake Superior National Wildlife Refuge
Bellefontaine, Ohio was founded in 1800 by John Bellefontaine and his wife Esther. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Great Miami River, which made it an important transportation hub. In 1815, Bellefontaine became the first city in what is now Hamilton County. The city quickly became a major center for trade and commerce, and its economy flourished until the early 20th century when textile production became more prevalent. In 1930, Bellefontaine was annexed by Cincinnati after a campaign led by Mayor John L. Lewis.
