Bellefontaine is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Toledo and 8 miles (13 km) east of Warren. It was founded by Samuel Bellefontaine in 1827 as a result of the land boom that followed the American Civil War. In 1881, the Bellefontaine post office was moved from its original location to what is now Bellefontaine Township. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. Bellefontaine’s history dates back to 1827 when Samuel Bellefontaine purchased 640 acres (250 ha) of forested land near present-day Toledo. With his new property, Bellefontaine became one of the most important landowners in northwest Ohio. Over time, he developed several businesses including a flour mill, sawmill and lumberyard. He also endowed two schools – one for boys and one for girls – in his village which served as educational institutions until 1923 when they were merged into the nearby Stark County School District. During the late 19th century, industrialization began to take hold throughout western Ohio and with it an increase in job opportunities for residents of northeast Ohio. The region around Bellefontaine became especially susceptible to this trend since transportation options were limited at that time and goods had to be transported long distances via riverboat or wagon train. This led to increased development within these boundaries as mills continued operations while people worked off-site in rural areas outside Cleveland or on farms inside Cleveland itself. By 1940, there were 10 factories/textile plants operating in northeast Ohio alone employing over 100 workers; all but three located in BelleFontane

The town's first school was built in 1802 and its first church was built in 1837. Bellefontaine experienced rapid growth after being named a city in 1840. It lost its status as a city after World War II but has regained some of its former glory since then.
