The first post office was established in 1802, and the first store was built in 1806. In 1814, Bellefontaine became part of Summit County and had its own court system. In 1945, Bellefontaine was struck by a tornado that killed 14 people and injured over 100 others. A new community hall was built subsequent to this event and has been used continuously since then as both a public library and local government center. Additionally, there are several gardens nearby that were designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr..

It remained a township until it merged with Defiance Township in 1903.Bellefontain experienced significant growth during World War II as thousands of soldiers from both sides fought in the war here. The population peaked at over 10,000 during the war years and since then has declined modestly. However, today Bellefontaine is still home to a number of active businesses including two hospitals, several churches, three shopping malls, four schools and two parks.
