Bellefontaine, Ohio became a city in 1869 after the merger of two other towns - Bellefontaine and Cleveland. In 1916, it was made a county seat. The city annexed the adjacent town of Clyde in 1922.
Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio located on the Scioto River. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Cleveland– Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was founded by General David Bellefontaine on November 10, 1817 as a post office called Indianola. The name derived from an Iroquois word meaning "beautiful stream." Bellefontaine's first store was built on what is now First Street in 1825 and operated until 1829. In 1830, he built a log cabin on what is now State Road 7 near present day Bellefontaine High School. In 1840, he moved his business to present day Second Street and started Bellefontaine Academy which became one of Ohio's leading high schools. Today, there are over 120 buildings in Bellefontaine including 11 schools and 2 churches that were built between 1830 and 1860 when the community experienced rapid growth due to its location along the riverbank and its status as a center for learning for Native Americans and European settlers alike. The community changed hands many times before it came under American control following World War II when it was taken over by the United States Army Air Forces Base Elmira (later Elmira Air Force Base). After years of stability it reverted back to private ownership during the late 1990s when much of Belle Fontaine's infrastructure had been destroyed in a fire that destroyed most of their businesses then also caused widespread damage to many other properties across town resulting in $15 million worth of Restoration projects starting up immediately In 2000/2001 new zoning regulations allowed for construction of sprawling luxury housing developments with names such as Venue One Communities which has since resulted in most homes being sold or leased out while few have been constructed In 2006/2007 section 1014 Township government reorganized into 36 wards with each ward electing two members who serve four year terms without pay In 2013 Mayor Tom Kane announced plans to demolish all but 1/3 of their old city hall building which will create 3 acres (1 hectare) surplus land adjacent to Clinton Park where they plan to build an underground parking garage with retail space aboveground
