Bellefontaine, Ohio is one of the oldest settlements in the United States. The community was founded in 1824 by Methodists from Kentucky. The town quickly became a center for the production of hemp, which was then used to make rope and other materials. In 1839, a group of local entrepreneurs built a sawmill and began producing lumber. By 1850, Bellefontaine had become an important grain village with its own flour mill and sawmill. In 1860, a group of men from Bellefontaine formed the First National Bank of Bellefontaine. The bank soon became one of the most successful in Ohio. In 1875, the bank merged with another local institution, the First National Bank of Cleveland, to form what would become known as First Cleveland National Bank. During this time, Bellefontaine also attained significant civic status thanks to its role as a commercial center and itsrole in promoting agricultural development in central Ohio. The collapse of World War II led to a period of stagnation for Bellefontaine untilthe early 1970s when new economic opportunities emerged that led to renewed growth and success at the bank. Bellefontaine was founded in 1827 by General David Bellefontaine and his brother-in-law, Colonel John Hartsfield. The town's first post office opened in 1828. In 1830, Bellefontaine became a village and later an incorporated town. It had a population of 582 in 1840 and 1,211 in 1860. The Village of Bellefontaine merged with the Town of Mansfield on April 15, 1865 to form the new City of Mansfield. On July 1, 1870, Bellefontaine became the townsite for Akron Township when that township was created from parts of southeastern Lucas County. The City of Mansfield annexed adjacent unincorporated communities located north and east of its limits on October 20, 1871; these communities were all named after General David Bellefontain: Battle Creek (north), East Amherst (east), Greenlawn (southwest), Hartsfield Heights (southeast) and Newtonville (southwest). On December 12th 1907 the last grain elevator in town closed down due to overloading which led to many people losing their jobs including some who built it themselves out of woodchips they found around town while still working at other businesses during that time period
