Bellefontaine was first settled in 1825 by John Bellefontaine, an American Revolutionary War veteran who later served as a justice of peace in Butler County. In 1858, Charles Noland bought land adjacent to what is now downtown Bellefontain from John BelleFontaine for $1 million dollars. Noland developed this land into one of Ohio's leading agricultural centres with his new company CropLife America Incorporated (later JCPenney). During World War II entrepreneur Harry Bartlett erected two towering apple orchards on much of today's eastern side near where Interstate 71 intersects I-71E andRoute 422A (now University Hill Boulevard). After war hostilities ended Bartlett sold his holdings and moved away butnot before leaving behind some valuable trees that are still standing today: "The Orchard" stands at 222 feet (72 meters) tall with its diameter measuring 24 feet (8 meters). One important aspect that has kept Bellemontayne alive during these years has been its strong community spirit: residents have helped support their local government through taxes and charitable donations time and time again! The area that is now Bellefontaine was first settled by families of French and Belgian descent in the late 18th century. The name "Bellefontaine" originated from a house built there by Nicholas Bellefontaine in 1792. The village of Bellefontaine developed around a mill which operated until 1824. After that time, the community grew largely due to its location on the Scioto River and its access to transportation including ferryboats and canals. The mills were destroyed during World War II but have been restored as tourist attractions. In addition to its milling history, Bellefontaine also played an important role in early industrial development with several businesses existing before 1800 including a bellows factory and sawmill. Bellefontaine is located at (41.751416, -81.66667). According to the 2010 census, it had a total population of 1,026 residents; 406 of whom lived within the village limits alone.
Bellefontaine was founded in 1795 by General James Clinton as a post office. The town prospered due to the production of cloth, paper, and other items. In 1806, Bellefontaine became a village. In 1821, it became an incorporated community and in 1826, it gained city status. By 1830, Bellefontaine had a population of 1,500 people. The town's economic prosperity ended during the American Civil War when much of the area was destroyed by Union troops. Bellefontaine's population decreased from its peak before the war to about 100 people by 1865.
