Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town located in Butler County, Ohio. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of four Bellefontaine towns and is one of the few municipalities in Ohio without a post office. The first settlers in Bellefontaine were Captain John Troup and his family who arrived in 1814. A sawmill began operations in 1819 and by 1830, there were six sawmills operating in Bellefontaine. In 1835, a grist mill was built and by 1840, there were 12 mills operating in Bellefontaine. One of the earliest automobiles was produced here; it was made by George Wagoner and sold to J.C. Hamlin for $1,000 on November 10th, 1908. The manufacturing base of Bellefontaine changed significantly during the 1920s when many breweries closed their doors due to prohibition (the United States had implemented Prohibition on October 28th 1919). However, new companies such as Pabst Brewing Corporation decided to open up shop within walking distance of each other in what became known as "the beer district". With over 100 breweries operational within walking distance at any given time during Prohibition era BelleFontaine enjoyed an enviable reputation as one of the most vibrant communities ever embroiled with brewing industry activity. Unfortunately for those businesses that could not keep up with production quotas set by craft brewers from out-of-state (and sometimes even abroad), liquor regulation followed suit following World War II and suddenly all those breweries found themselves outbid for market share - essentially becoming ghost factories overnight/.
