Bellefontaine, Ohio is one of the oldest settlements in Ohio and has been a part of the United States for over 150 years. The city was founded on a small stream called Bellefontaine Creek in 1814 by French colonists. The first gun store in town was established in 1827. In 1853, Bellefontaine became the site of the US Congress’s first ever meeting with an international scope when it convened there to consider boundary changes between Canada and America. At this time, guns were still seen as an important part of American society and were considered something that should be well guarded. When Bellefontaine, Ohio was founded in 1824, it was the only settlement in what is now known as Northwest Ohio. The area had been part of the Lake Erie region for centuries and the first European settlers arrived in 1795. By 1830, Bellefontaine had a population of about 100 people and consisted of a few frame buildings and a few outbuildings. Bellefontaine began to grow rapidly after 1836 when the canal was built through the area. In that year, James Kapp became the first white settler in Bellefontaine and he opened a store. Soon, other settlers started arriving and by 1850, there were around 200 people living in Bellefontaine. One of the early pioneers toBellefontaine was Augustus Kelley who arrived in 1851. Kelley owned land on which he erected several residences including one called "The Gables". He also built a mill which processed agricultural products such as flour and corn. Kelley's son-in-law Joshua Deffenbaugh also began life in Bellefontaine and he operated a small grocery store until his death in 1895. Other early residents include John Herrick (1827-1911), Elijah Hite (1829-1922) and Levi Sheedy (1830-1907). Bellemontainians played an important role during the American Civil War because many men from this town volunteered their services as soldiers or sailors. Some of these men are remembered most notably General Edwin Ewing (1838-1900) who served at both nipple fortifications at Perryville IL & Wilson MO before being captured near Vicksburg MS; Private Samuel Jourdan (1862 - 1925) who deserted his unit at Harper's Ferry; Private George Armstrong Custer (1863 - 1951) – Chief Horseman with 5th Cavalry Regiment; William Fenton Farnsworth (maiden name Unknown – died young while serving with army 1862) – private First Class with 7th Infantry Regiment Cincinnati County Uniformed Militia
Bellefontaine is a town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is located in Butler County. Bellefontaine was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Bellefontaine and his wife Catherine Mountjoy. It was named for Mountjoy's sister-in-law, who had recently moved to the area from Indiana. In 1814, the Bellefontaines sold their land to John Calkins and his family. In 1868, John Calkins donated land to establish Bellefontaine University which still operates today as a private university with colleges of law, medicine and dentistry. TheUniversity has also produced numerous prominent citizens including three US Senators (Ted Kennedy, Bernie Sanders and Bob Menendez). In 1892 the Bellefontaine Lumber Company built a sawmill on the river near present day BelleFontaine Township. The mill continued operation until 1964 when it was replaced by a more modern mill that continues to produce lumber today. The townspeople have always been involved in local government with two mayors serving since 1984; current Mayor Charles Friesen has held office since 2003. In addition, there are five township trustees who serve one year each with staggered terms; current trustees are: Barbara Jaffe (2009-2013), Rick Whelan (2013-2018), Danica Kirka (2018-present) and Jeff Denny (present). Each trustee oversees an area such as parks/ recreation or development projects within their assigned township limits

Bellefontaine is a community in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States, and part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was 9,833 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine owes its name to Bellefontaine Township, which was organized in 1816. The township is named for General James Wilkinson Bellefontaine who fought in the American Revolution as a captain in the 67th Regiment of Hamilton County Volunteers. Bellefontaine's first settler was Levi Coffin from Connecticut. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the village in 1817-1818. A post office called Belle Fontaine was established in 1819, and remained open until 1951. The first school opened on November 12, 1821, and became known as "The Old School" until it closed in 1903. In 1830 John Hering founded "Hering's Furniture Store" on Main Street near today's intersection of Elm and Washington Streets; this store served as one of Bellefontaine's main sources of income for many years. In 1835 John Crampton erected what is now known as the Crampton House on State Road 7 south of town; this house served as an early focal point for local government and housed various town officials before it was destroyed by fire in 1907. cember 1st (or February 14th) 1865 during the American Civil War Union General Ambrose Burnside ordered Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest to march through Bellefontain with his cavalry unit destroying any stagecoaches or other transportation available while they were passing through; this event is considered to be one of the most damaging military engagements occurring within central Ohio during that time period In 1902 William Kapp purchased "Belle Fontaine Creamery", which continued to produce milk products until 1984 when it merged with Nabisco Incorporated to form /Chicago-based Peet’s Coffee & Tea Corporation . In 1924 Knox Sayers opened his clothing store at 333 Elm Street followed by Jugular Wines & Spirits next door at 335 Elm Street which also functioned as a grocery store from 1924 until 1978 when it too merged into Peet’s Coffee & Tea Corporation . After World War II many small businesses closed due to hard timeshooting along with general economic decline throughout much Midwest United States including Ohio however some such as "The Old School" still operated providing educational opportunities for local students up until 1953 when it closed again making way for new schools opening such as Warren Brown High School located just east of town off Route 7
Bellefontaine was founded in 1796 by Captain John Bellefontaine. The town was named for the Bellefleur family, who had owned the land. In 1812, Bellefontaine was incorporated as a village. The village lost its charter in 1868 and ceased to exist. In 1928, Bellefontaine became a city.
