Bellefontaine is a census-designated place in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is part of the Akron metropolitan area. It was first settled by French colonists in 1788 and named for Belle Isle on the Great Lakes. From 1814 to 1836, it was part of Lucas County; from 1840 to 1849 it was in Cuyahoga County; and from 1851 to 1865 it was in Belmont County. The town of Bellefontaine began as a small frontier settlement near present-day Akron on the east side of the Maumee River between 1800 and 1802 with only 10 residents. It grew rapidly due to its location on high ground overlooking a rich agricultural region and its access to water resources. By 1830, Bellefontaine had over 100 residents and a school system that included two buildings: a log house used for classrooms and an addition built by subscription which served as Mechanics Institute until 1870 when it became known as the Bellefontaine Female Academy (now University High School). A new courthouse was completed in 1830 but never used because timber prices plummeted during the financial Panic of 1837 caused by fluctuations in gold prices. In 1840, land north of Bellefontaine along Route 7 became available via donation from John Browning after he killed six men while stagecoaching through central Michigan under license from General Wayne Kossuth—the first armed attempt against territorial government officials west of the Appalachian Mountains In 1850, Sylvanus Thayer moved his family from Massachusetts to Bellefontaine where they set up shop near what is now Main Street Thayer’s business prospered until 1861 when Union soldiers burned his mill during an army encampment nearby As taxes soared following Kentucky’s admission into the Union in 1861, Thayer responded with measures such as higher tariffs (which helped him keep his business afloat) that cost him much money He sold his businesses at auction and retired for many years before reopening them again starting out small again In 1915, Thayer donated land adjacent to what is now University High School so that construction could begin on what would become one of America’s first college campuses A fire destroyed main building early on September 24th 1916 which delayed classes but not before students were ableto participate in election day celebrations outside

Bellefontaine was founded in 1811 by Nicholas Bellefontaine and his wife Maria. The original plat of Bellefontaine included land for an academy and a gristmill. In 1814, Nicholas Bellefontaine donated all of his remaining land to the town as part of a gift from his brother-in-law John Doherty. The village began to form from individual homes around this time. In 1839, the first store was built on Main Street in what is now downtown Bellefontaine. By 1860, there were fifteen businesses in the village and it had a population of 350 residents; however, by 1870 that number had decreased to seventy-five because many residents moved away during the American Civil War. Despite this decrease in population over time, Bellefontaine continued to thrive as a small community with its own economy until 1945 when it became part of the newly created Akron–Canton metropolitan area; thereafter, it has seen modest growth beginning in the late 1990s until reaching current levels since 2000 due largely to outdoor recreation (primarily fishing) which has been expanding rapidly along with new development within walking distance of both local reservoirs and downtown attractions such as art galleries and restaurants
