Bellefontaine is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in the county and the most populous city in Hamilton County after Cleveland. The first gun lock company was organized by Nicholas J. Butler in 1828 and it became known as Butler Lock & Key Co.. In 1892, Bellefontaine's first electric light bulb was installed. The population of Bellefontaine exploded from 602 residents to 30,883 by 1930; this growth led to an increase in demand for locksmith services and a corresponding increase in prices for locksmithing supplies. By 1955, Bellefontaine had outgrown its downtown area and began to build upscale housing on undeveloped land near Interstate 71 northwest of town. In 1970, Bellefontaine annexed part of neighboring Brecksville which gave Bel-Fontainians more than 1 square mile (2 km²) of contiguous territory outside of town limits for shopping and cultural activities such as art galleries, theaters, museums and other attractions. Although some people maintain that gun locks are not inherently dangerous or even helpful devices, they have been used extensively throughout history to protect both individuals and businesses from unauthorized access or theft. Bellefontaine has been home to many famous people including George Washington Carver (1865-1943),ator Babe Ruth (1902-2002), and Edward Giannini (1920-2011). The town also hosted the first nationally televised baseball game when Boston Red Sox pitcher Bob Feller faced Cleveland Indians player Gene Autry at Euclid Avenue Stadium on July 15, 1947. Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town located in the Athens-Clarke County, Ohio area. The population was 1,588 at the 2000 census. Bellefontaine is one of six townships in Athens-Clarke County. It is also part of the Columbiana Rural School District. Bellefontaine was founded in 1818 by John Bellefontaine and his wife Nancy. When Athens-Clarke County was created in 1821, Bellefontaine became part of it. The town site was purchased from the Canuck Indians in 1865 by Jno Ault and others who laid out what would become Bellefontaine Township. In 1889, Bellefontain had a post office with Ladd as its first mailer. By 1910, there were ten businesses in town with an average attendance of ninety people per day. At that time, agricultural production accounted for most of the town's income and employment. However, during World War II various industries sprang up including aluminum production at nearby Alcoa and shipbuilding on the Dan River east of town; both industries declined after the war but have since returned to some degree due to economic development within central Athens-Clarke County over the past several decades. According to the 2010 census, there are now just over 2 dozen residents living within downtown boundaries (the core business district) while almost all other residences are scattered around rural roads outside of town limits or along county lines nearest to populated areas such as Dayton and Columbus
