Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,693 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown-Zanesville Combined Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was founded by George Bellefontaine in 1825 as a trading post on the Scioto River. The first store was built on present day Bellefontaine Avenue and named for him. In 1827, he erected a log cabin near what is now downtown Bellefontaine to serve as his trading post and home office. He also built a gristmill on present day Elm Street which still operates today. Bellefontaine became an incorporated village in 1892 and adopted its current name from George Bellefontaine's daughter, Emma Bellefontaine Boilard (1848-1935). The village had a population of 175 when it separated from nearby Dayton to become an independent municipality in 1904; its population grew to 498 by 1920 before declining again during World War II but rose to 607 after the war ended. The Village Board decided in 1957 to change its name back to Bellefontaine – following recommendations by then-Mayor John Fenton – after consulting with local citizens who felt that the original name conveyed too much negative associations with nearby Dayton and Middletown. The change came into effect on October 1, 1957; since then, it has been one of only two villages in Butler County without any full time city services (the other being Findlay). Bellemontainians are known for their annual Fourth of July fireworks displays along Main Street between Washington and Elm Streets; their annual Strawberry Festival held at Centenary Park during late May or early June; their wide variety of cultural events including concerts at Grosse Pointe University's Great Lakes Campus; their large number of Beta Chi sisters living within easy walking distance of each other throughout most of central Ohio; as well as several golf courses within driving distance for residents and visitors alike!
