Bellefontaine is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. It has been called the "Village of Trees" because of its concentration of oak trees. Bellefontaine is located on the Scioto River and it is close to other villages such as London and Fallston. Bellefontaine was founded in 1796 by John Bellefontaine and his wife Susannah White. The first settlers were Irish Catholics who came from County Cork. In 1812, James Kieft moved to Bellefontaine with his family after purchasing land in what is now Delaware Township from the Indians. Kieft had come from Waterford, Ireland to become a landowner in central Ohio. He also became one of the early members of the Masonic Lodge No. 2 in Stark County and helped found that lodge's successor organization, the Grand Lodge of Ohio (GLE). Kieft died on December 13, 1814, at age 74 years old due to yellow fever contracted while living on his farm near Wooster Junction along with four other men: William Hennepin (1776-1837), Isaac Niles (1778-1847), George Stephenson (1781-1852) and Nicholas Cooke (1783-1864). They are buried at Beavercreek Cemetery in Wooster Junction next to fellow Scotsman Alexander Macdonald and Cincinnatus Greene Sr.(died 1830). Bellefontaine is a small community located in the process of becoming a city. The town was founded in 1825 by refugees from the French and Indian War, who were seeking new homes. The original population consisted of about sixty settlers. In 1829, Bellefontaine became an independent circuit court town with its own mayor and judiciary. By 1860, the population had grown to more than one hundred people. In 1881, Bellefontaine incorporated as a city, and rapidly grew into a major center of commerce and culture. By 1915, it had become the largest city in Butler County by population. In 1920, Bellefontain became part of the newly formed City of Cincinnati when that area was split off from Butler County. The growth of Bellefontain led to depletion of natural resources such as timber and water supply; however, during World War II, Bellefontaine played an important role in aircraft production at Parma Air Force Base. The city has seen significant redevelopment since then - most notably through the construction of two large shopping malls (BelleFontaine Town Center and Riverfront Park) as well as several new apartment buildings and condos developments along riverfront property.
