By 1870, Bellefontaine had become one of the most important commercial centers in central Ohio. During World War II, Bellefontaine played an important role as a munitions production plant for General Motors Corporation's Blanchardstown Plant near Dayton. After Pearl Harbor, Bellefontaine became an official US military training base under Third Army Headquarters until 1945 when it reverted to civilian control. In 1949, Bellefontaine voters passed a resolution recognizing their history and culture which has been preserved through annual Festival of Folklife events since then. The community continues to celebrate cultural heritage through its tourism industry with festivals throughout the year that include art exhibitions, music concerts and food demonstrations
Bellefontaine was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1796. The town was named for Bellefonte, a daughter of the Revolutionary War general, George Washington. Wilkinson built a trading post and log cabin here in 1798. The first school in Bellefontaine opened in 1800. In 1814, the town voted to secede from the United States and formed its own government. It remained an independent nation until 1815 when it joined the Union. Bellefontaine had a population of approximately 1,000 people by 1830. By 1840, the town had declined to about 100 people and ended its existence as a municipality in 1847.
