Thecity regained some prominence following World War II thanks to its contribution to postwar reconstruction in central Ohio. Today, Bellefontaine is an important cultural center with many popular music festivals occurring annually along with art exhibitions, classic car shows and other events throughout the year
Bellefontaine is a small town in the United States. It was founded in 1817 by John Bellefontaine and his wife, Judith. The town has a population of about 9,000 people. Bellefontaine is located in Hamilton County, Ohio. It is bordered to the north by the city of Cincinnati and to the east by Cuyahoga Falls. To the south it shares borders with Mentor and Medina. Bellefontaine is named after Jean-Baptiste Bellefontaine, Sieur de Belleforeste, one of France's most famous generals during the Seven Years' War. In 1795, he purchased land at what is now Bellefontaine from John Bellamy for $10 per acre. He built a house on this land and called it "Belleforeste." The name was eventually changed to "Bellefontain." The first settler in what would become Bellefontaine was James Henniker who arrived in 1801. He had married Sarah Baldwin and moved west from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania before moving to Hamilton County where he became justice of peace for twenty years and served as surveyor for several townships including Belleforeste before his death in 1825. His grandson Isaac Henniker also lived in Belleforeste during this time period. James Henniker's son David also came to Hamilton County around this time but left behind him two sons: Jabez Henniker (1811-1889) who became a prominent lawyer in Cincinnati and Albert Gassaway (1824-1902), who served as Mayor of Cincinnati from 1865-68; both men were descendants of James Henniker Sr.. Jabez Henniker married Anna Beall (1828-1912), daughter of Jeremiah Beall (1796-1871). Bellefontaine was a small town in the pre-Civil War Ohio Valley. It was located on the border of Butler and Warren counties, east of Dayton. The population was 1,816 at the time of the 2010 census. Bellefontaine was founded in 1824 by farmers who named it for Belle Isle in France. The village had a population of about 100 people when it became a city in 1858. In 1870, Bellefontaine lost its status as a city when it merged with neighboring Dayton to form the new city of Dayton. Bellefontaine had two schools and one post office until 1925 when both were closed due to financial difficulties. After that, Bellefontaine relied on private donations and fundraising to keep its schools open until they were shuttered in 2008. The only building still standing from the early days of Bellefontaine is an old gristmill which still stands today and is used as a museum for local history buffs. There are also several churches and other assorted buildings remaining from that time period including a few shops, but most have been replaced by housing developments over the years.
