In 1845, Mayor George Washington Carver subdivided land in front of city hall into blocks and renamed them “streets” after his political rivals before winning an election that year. By 1850, most residents had moved out or been replaced by new arrivals from surrounding counties. However, due to its location on high ground near much traffic and industry, Belleville continued to grow until 1910 when it peaked at around 30 000 people.
