The town became an important transportation center for Midwest farmers because it had direct access to markets in Cincinnati and Cleveland. A sawmill operated in Bellefontaine from 1849 until 1861; this mill helped produce some of Ohio's first furniture. The town also boasted a flour mill (1853), a cheese factory (1868), an agricultural cooperative (1914), a garage (1921), and several churches including one built in 1865 by Methodist preacher James Witherspoon Geddes Sr.. Bellefontaine experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to munitions production sites at Lorain Arsenal and Wilmington Works. During World War II, BelleFontaine also became home to one of America's largest refugee resettlement programs which brought over 2,500 Polish Americans into the United States between 1940 and 1945.
