Bellefontaine is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Wilmington, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Bellefontaine was founded in 1811 by colonists from New York City. The first post office for Bellefontaine was established in 1821. The name of the town was changed to Bellefontaine in 1872 after its incorporation into the city of Dayton. In 1902, Bellefontaine withdrew from municipal government and formed an independent village again with a population of just over 100 people. In 1978, Bellefontainie merged with Wilberforce Township to form the new Dayton-Middletown-Wilmington metropolitan area which has a population of 11 million people as of 2019.

Bellefontaine is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Canton–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine is named for General James Bellefontaine, who fought in the American Revolution and was one of the first militaries to cross over into Canada. Bellefontaine was settled in 1800 by French Canadians who were escaping British rule. In 1810, a post office called Bellefontaine was established in what is now Bellefontaine Township. The first settlers were John and Martha Soper, who arrived from Maryland on July 12, 1800. By 1820, three villages had been organized around that community: Belleville (later renamed Bellefontayne), West Bloomfield and East Bloomfield (now Vernon). In 1824, four more villages – Amherst Heights (later renamed Amherstburg), Bloomingdale (later renamed Newark), Fairlawn and Hillsboro – were organized around Bellefontaine. That same year saw the opening of the Erie Canal which made transportation much easier and allowed for heavy industry to be built in Bellefontaine and beyond. The most important event to occur during this time period occurred on November 8th when General James "Stonewall" Jackson's army invaded Ohio from Kentucky with the intent of destroying Ulysses S Grant's army besieging Fort Harrison near Cincinnati. After defeating Grant's army at various battles along his route through central Ohio including Battle of Fallen Timbers near Dayton on November 11th 1825, Jackson turned his attention towards Cincinnati where he defeatedrero General Marquis de Lafayette at Monmouth Park on December 13th 1825 after a bloody battle that lasted several hours straight. This event helped solidify eastern Ohio's allegiance to America while also demonstrating street-to-street fighting between Native Americans and white European Americans as something other than an Indian vs European conflict; something that would become increasingly common throughout 19th century America as warfare increased between different groups of people based upon ethnicity or religious affiliation
