The town was founded by two families who were interested in horology. In 1885, they started a store in what is now the heart of Bellefontaine. From there, they began to sell binoculars and other optical products. The first binocular company in Bellefontaine was J&P Optical Company. Their products were very successful and they soon became known as the bestbinocular company in America. In 1919, they merged with Rheinische Warentest AG which made them even more successful. They continued making high-quality binoculars until their bankruptcy in 1977. Bellefontaine went through some major changes during its time as a town. One of the biggest was when it became an annex for Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio in 1922. This allowed Bellefontaine to become closer to its larger neighbor and make greater investments within itself! Another big change came when Bellemontainians voted to incorporate as a city on November 3rd, 1925. This gave their community much more power and control over its own destiny! During the 1930s, Bellefontaine experienced some really tough times due to World War II. However, through hard work and determination, they emerged victorious and continue prospering today! They are still an important part of American history – thanks largely to their binoculars business!

By 1880, Bellefontaine had become one of Ohio's largest cities with a population of over 100,000 people. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century as various industries expanded in their operations in Bellefontaine. In 1916, Bellefontaine merged with neighboring townships to form the present-day City of Bellefontaine.
Bellefontaine is a small town in Fayette County, Ohio, United States. The population was 584 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was founded by French colonists in 1797. The first post office was established in 1802. Bellefontaine's name comes from the Bellefleur family who owned land in the area at that time. The first store in Bellefontaine opened its doors on Main Street in 1834. In 1892, A&W Restaurants began operations and has continued to operate ever since. In 1951, Bellefontanees served as host to the annual World's Fair which took place at the Exposition Park grounds in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. In 2003, Bellefontaine became an unincorporated community within Fayette Township while still maintaining its own government and schools with their own village mayor and school board members. That same year, a new library and park were dedicated on Main Street near where the original store once stood; it remains one of only two agencies serving both villages today (the other being City Hall). -Belle Fontaine High School - This high school offers classes for students from grades 9-12 including courses related to fine arts and vocational training as well as general education requirements such as math, science, English language arts/literature/history/social studies etc.; it also offers coeducational prep schools for boys and girls beginning through 8th grade -Belle Fontaine Elementary School - This elementary school provides pre-kindergarten through 8th grade; it also houses a gymnasium and several classrooms used for special needs instruction; this school is home to many of BelleFontain's historical artifacts

Bellefontaine was a small community located in the southeastern corner of Ohio, on the Scioto River. It had a post office from 1812 until 1845, and a school from 1830 until 1872. The community was founded by Obed Bellefontaine, who arrived in 1796 from Vermont. He organized a wagon train that crossed the country in search of new land to farm, and he named his new settlement Bellefontaine after his mother's birthplace, Fontainbleau, France. In 1811, Bellefontaine also built the first gristmill in Ohio. By 1840, Bellefontaine had over 100 inhabitants. The community declined during the late 19th century due to railroad construction and population growth outside of its borders. However, it regained some importance after it was designated as an emergency regional center for education within northern Lucas County in 1972. As of 2010, Bellefontaine has only 6 residents remaining and is classified as a census-designated place (CDP).

In recent years, however, Beaufort has experienced significant decline since it lost much of its population and economic importance following difficult times throughout the 2000s.
